Side Story 5
Treating Fenrir made me realize something.
It seems my healing magic is also effective on animals and monsters.
That means this ability still has more potential uses.
I contacted a merchant who specializes in selling livestock.
「Before you kill any injured or maimed livestock, I want you to sell them to me instead. I’ll pay you a fair price.」
「Injured livestock? What would you use them for? Oh well, fine by me.」
The livestock merchant agreed to sell me any injured animals for quite cheap.
Apparently a lot of injured livestock gets sent back to the merchant every month.
Horses with injured legs can no longer run, so they get killed.
Disposing of livestock like this is part of the merchant’s job.
Cows that have trouble producing milk also get rounded up by the merchant and slaughtered together.
But that’s such a waste.
Most farmers find it too much of a hassle to send injured animals to the merchant, so they just kill them on their own farms.
So I told the merchant to pay the farmers when he picks up their injured livestock.
From now on, the livestock merchant will bring any injured animals to me.
As a merchant, he’s happy to make money off livestock that would otherwise be useless.
I bought a large number of animals from the merchant and had my slaves transport them.
I tied them up in the stables on my estate and cast my healing magic on them all at once.
「Alright! Extra Heal…!」
Horses whose legs were injured can run again, and cows with poor milk production are the picture of health.
There was even a dog who lost its leg when it was bitten by a wolf.
They’re all fixed up thanks to my healing magic.
「I did it!」
Seeing this, Fen was so moved she shed tears of joy.
She came over and embraced me with her fluffy body.
「Master… you are such a noble person… to do this for the animals… As a fellow beast, I am extremely grateful and moved to tears…! As expected of the one I devote myself to…!」
「Hey now… you’re overdoing it…」
Then I decided to sell the healthy livestock.
I set up a distribution channel with another livestock merchant, and made quite a nice profit.
I also just gave some horses away as a bonus when nobles came to buy slaves.
It’s killing two birds with one stone, since they can ride the horses home with their newly purchased slaves.
More than anything, seeing animals in pain is harder to watch than humans.
Helping so many animals made me feel a little better.
I left caring for the livestock to my many slaves.
They seem to prefer looking after the animals compared to doing chores and getting yelled at by my father.
Interacting with the dogs helps relax the slaves and take their minds off things.
