Chapter 303

◇◇◇

Priest Leito seemed at a loss for how to respond to Omi’s words.
His reaction was common among those who had been driven to suffering by others. Can I really trust this? Will I be hurt badly again? These unanswerable questions were swirling in his mind even at this very moment.
Nevertheless, Priest Leito tried to behave as sincerely as possible. He made an effort to say what he needed to tell the two.

「One of the reasons Cardinal Gilbert asked you both to come to Lemone first is because of Melissa.」

Priest Leito directed his gaze toward the girl in the coffin.

「She is still alive.」

Despite the content, Mika couldn’t breathe.

「However—she’s in an extremely precarious situation.」

His expression told of the severity.

「After Ryūgūin pushed her to the brink of death, by chance, Cardinal Gilbert visited Lemone the next day and was able to examine her just in time. But Melissa was already in what could be called a terminal state. Even for Cardinal Gilbert, who holds the position of Cardinal, handles rare healing magic, and possesses vast knowledge, treating her was impossible. Still, he didn’t give up on Melissa’s life.」

Both Mika and Omi knew the brilliantly shining compassionate heart hidden within Gilbert, who always maintained a casual expression.
Of course Mika knew, having had a fair amount of interaction with him in the past, but Omi knew even more so.

「Cardinal Gilbert has been waiting all this time for you to come, Lady Mika.」

Waiting—except for when she went outside the town for perfunctory service activities without her heart in it, she had been in Lemone the whole time. Mika couldn’t help but wonder how they had felt watching her during that time.

「He used a rare item, the ‘Icy Coffin,’ which stops internal time, to place a seal on Melissa. He said, ‘Even if I can’t do it myself, when the time comes, she will surely be healed by someone with healing abilities that surpass my own.’」

Priest Leito gently placed his hand on the transparent coffin.
Mika knew about Melissa’s disease, 「Excessive Mana Production Organ Failure Disease.」 Of course she did—Mika is a Saint, and one without equal in history at that.
Even to someone like her, saving Melissa seemed impossible. She could see it. Roughly speaking, most of the cells making up Melissa’s body had already been replaced by abnormal cells.
That’s why Mika couldn’t find the words she should say.
However—

「Mika.」

Omi called to her while still looking at the coffin.
Not only Mika who was called, but also Priest Leito turned to face Omi.

「You and I can save this girl.」

It was like gospel.
Though just a single statement, because it was Omi who said it, it was an undeniable fact—

「However, it won’t be easy.」

Remember? she continued.

「Remember when our son-in-law nearly became a spirit? At that time, most of his body had been replaced by Light Magic particles, and even the normal parts were being invaded. So we removed all the Light Magic particles from his body.」

It was the two of them who had saved Yamada Ichiro when he was about to graduate from being human, with Light Magic particles—Light Magic elements, Light particles, Light mana, they’re called by various names but all refer to the same thing—mixed with the cells throughout his body.

「The method to save Melissa is simple and clear. Just like with our son-in-law, we need to remove all the cells that threaten her life.」

「Is that… possible?」

「If you’re asking whether it’s possible or not, I answer that it is.
At that time, our son-in-law’s body contained familiar Light mana, so you were able to detect and remove it relatively easily. This time is similar. Detect whether cells are producing excessive mana, and if so, remove them. However, as you know, it’s not as simple as just saying it.」

Hearing the explanation, Mika wasn’t reassured at all.

「And even if we manage to do that, there’s still a major problem, isn’t there?」

She had a significant concern.

「Unlike that time, we can’t use Light Magic for recovery now. Melissa isn’t as strong as Ichiro. I don’t think she can withstand the removal of abnormal cells without recovery in her current state.」

Omi listened silently.

「Also, there’s the issue that we need to remove them faster than the abnormal cells can multiply. And if we consider her body’s recovery, we need to choose a method that doesn’t rely on magic, which means we can’t leave her in the ‘Icy Coffin.’
But with symptoms that have progressed this far… the moment we release the ‘Icy Coffin’—」

Mika couldn’t finish her sentence.
But even without saying it all, not only Priest Leito but even Gilbert, who wasn’t present, must have been thinking the same thing.

「I’ll manage that part.」

Omi folded her arms.
There was no arrogance in her demeanor; rather, Mika felt so much reliability that she wanted to lean on her.

「I’ll create a directional barrier that doesn’t rely on mana.」

Omi raised her index finger.

「Just as I said. I’ll create a ‘barrier that suppresses only the proliferation of abnormal cells without hindering the girl’s growth inside the barrier’ without using mana. Meeting so many specific requirements will be extremely draining, but it can’t be helped.」

Then Omi continued, 「A barrier—well, let’s provisionally call it the ‘Ihatov Barrier,’」 and with a slight smile, she waved her raised index finger as if rearranging and building something, and began to explain to Mika and Priest Leito.

「For Melissa to recover, she needs to be taken out of the coffin. But if she’s taken out, her symptoms will progress. So I’ll use the ‘Ihatov Barrier’ to suppress that.
Even I, however, can’t maintain this barrier indefinitely, so we’ll return her to the coffin while I rest.」

Omi calmly lays out the plan going forward.

「And then, let’s see. To help Melissa recover, I should also prepare some medicine that doesn’t involve mana.」

She directed her gaze to Mika’s eyes.

「The ‘Ihatov Barrier’ is a heavy burden. During that time, removing Melissa’s cells will be Mika—your job.」

Mika’s eyes wavered with anxiety.

「Will I be able to do it?」

「—Michaela.」

For some reason, both Mika and Priest Leito found themselves kneeling with hands clasped before they could think.
Her voice was solemn, stern, yet gentle and warm.

「—I believe that you will certainly accomplish this.」

With Omi’s words, tranquility dominated the place.
It was something Mika always felt nearby when praying in the cathedral.
And then, after a time that seemed both momentary and eternal,

「Don’t worry. While you examine Melissa, I will be by your side.」

The two remained motionless, as if what they had just witnessed was an illusion. However,

「What are you two doing? Hurry up and stand.」

Breaking the tranquility, Omi urged the two.

「We have many things we must do from now on.」

As mixed emotions of relief, tension, anxiety, and sacredness overflowed, Priest Leito finally realized that he had been crying.
Saint Mika wiped her eyes with her sleeve and stood up, then without hesitation stood next to Omi.
