That plump figure is clearly not one of a clergyman—no, not even a former clergyman. His weight would easily be in the triple digits by Japanese standards, telling the story of just how affluent his lifestyle truly is.
And that impression is correct. Currently, he’s visiting a vacation home with his entire family in tow, located in a quiet area that has been developed for comfortable living. He spends his days in complete idleness. It’s like staying at a luxurious summer home in Japan, escaping the hustle and bustle of the city to relax.
His name is Harrison Harris. He’s a man who once served as a senior priest of the Crater Church in a reasonably large town. Back then, all he possessed was a faith as tiny as the tip of his pinky finger and a talent for gathering money. He used that talent and the name of the Crater Church to collect vast amounts of wealth. Of course, his methods were far from honorable—soliciting dishonest donations and deceiving people in the name of the Crater Church’s god, all deplorable tactics.
Using the funds collected through such means, he curried favor with those above him (there were plenty of money-minded individuals in the Crater Church’s upper echelons too) and did whatever he pleased. Unfortunately for him, it all came to an end. When the Hero was captured, a large-scale purge occurred within the church, and he was no exception. Stripped of his position, he now lives a life that’s practically semi-retirement.
But Harrison was fine with that. Though much of his assets were seized, many of the cleverly hidden ones remained undiscovered, and once things had quieted down, a substantial sum returned to his possession. That wealth was enough for his entire family, including himself, to live ten lifetimes without lowering their standard of living.
Even so, he had no intention of remaining idle. This was just a time to lay low. Someday, he would absolutely make a comeback using his current funds as capital. That’s what he had sworn in his heart. Still, he thought it might be good to take it easy and rest his bones for a while… With that mindset, he had been spending his days in lethargy.
◇◇◇
Harrison, with wealth rivaling that of renowned merchants, lived with a family that consumed money like water. While the current vacation home was an ideal space for Harrison, it seemed not so for his family. Finding it far too rural, his wife and two children had set off by carriage that morning, spending three hours one-way to reach the largest nearby town.
They looked at expensive clothes and ornaments, enjoyed performances, ate what they wanted to eat, drank what they wanted to drink, and spent their time exactly as they pleased without a shred of restraint or hesitation.
Meanwhile, Harrison had commanded his servants to prepare for a drinking party, all alone in his room in broad daylight. His wife is of noble birth, but he himself wasn’t originally a nobleman. So when alone, he sheds the burden of etiquette he’s desperately acquired over the years.
He fills an oversized, custom-made glass to the brim with wine and downs it in one go. Then he tears into what appears to be smoked dragon meat, exhaling a puff of alcohol-laden breath. Despite having meat still in his mouth, he couldn’t care less as he roughly grabs a handful of almonds and tosses them haphazardly into his mouth. Crunching away, he washes it down with another pour of wine, experiencing a kind of bliss.
「Is it delicious?」
A voice speaks near his ear. Simultaneously, a presence suddenly manifests behind him. Even as a fallen senior priest of the Crater Church, he desperately activates his alcohol-soaked brain and instantly creates a barrier.
「Now, now, let’s not. I don’t intend to harm you.」
It’s a woman’s voice. There’s a brain-melting beauty and sensuality to it, but beyond that, there’s an undeniable holiness that makes Harrison confused by his own urge to bow his head.
「What the—!!」
He turns around but can’t make out who it is. The figure is blurry and indistinct, with no clear face or form. Not a monster or supernatural creature… perhaps a spirit? No, but… Before reaching a conclusion, he pushes out his barrier to attack, making contact with the figure—but with a deflating 「pssht」 sound, the barrier disintegrates into dust.
「Impossible!!」
Though a money-grubber, he was once a respectable priest. His experience and ability are different from those of some young upstart—and yet…
「Im…possible.」
He tries to regenerate the barrier, but he can’t form one. Moreover, the holy power within him strangely refuses to work at all, no matter how hard he tries.
