Recently, I’ve been approached more often by soldiers. Apparently, my cooking is unexpectedly popular, and they’re curious to see who’s making it. They come to check it out and try to get friendly with me. It’s nice to make more friends. My subordinates used to butt in with all sorts of comments at first, but after tasting my cooking, they started calling me “sensei” (teacher). Teacher… I’m not such an important person. I asked for a different way to address me, but they stubbornly refuse. I had no choice but to accept it. I guess this is fate too.
It’s Shuri here. These days, I’m enjoying cooking with my new kitchen knife. It’s sharp and easy to use. Gungrave makes a sour face, but I like it. The crest engraved on the blade looks cool too. Now, it’s been a year since I started cooking here. There’s something I want to try. Making dessert. We’ve secured a food supply route, and now we can get sugar and eggs. So I made some tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) for Arius.
“Sweet… Is this really eggs!?” “Yes. I made dashimaki (savory egg roll) too. Which do you prefer?” “Hmm… Well… It’s hard to choose, but if I had to pick, I’d say the sweet one.” “I was thinking of using this to make new kinds of dessert.” “I’ll be the first to taste test. Okay?”
Faced with her overwhelming force and the hopeless difference in our abilities, all I could do was nod. By the way, it seems my subordinates overheard this conversation, and Arius got scolded pretty badly. It wasn’t my fault. However, making dessert requires various things. Of course, there are ingredients, but we also need tools like scales, sieves, and an oven. Precise measurements and timing are crucial in making dessert. So I decided to consult with Lill.
“So, for making dessert, I need-” “Lill will do it.” “Oh, okay.” “She gets to taste first. Got it?” “Well… um…” “First.”
As I was about to nod under the pressure, Arius burst in and saved me. It almost turned into a ridiculous fight, but when I tried to say I wouldn’t make anything, they suddenly smiled and shook hands, pretending to make up. This sudden turn of events was beyond my understanding. In the end, Lill made various tools for me.
Later, I was invited to a certain ceremony. This time, it’s a martial arts competition that developed from a dispute between the Knights and the Imperial Guard. According to Gungrave, the Knights are responsible for the country’s defense, while the Imperial Guard is in charge of protecting the capital as the last line of defense. Apparently, it’s about which one has higher status and is more important. Ha, what a silly story. Both are essential, that’s why they exist. If they worked together, it would undoubtedly be wonderful.
“If everyone thought like you, Shuri, things would be easier.” “That’s true. By the way, why are we being invited to this ceremony?” “Remember that battle over the Salt Road profits last year? We’re being invited as guests for this martial arts competition, partly as thanks for that.” “Feels kind of like we’re being used, doesn’t it?” “Exactly. They’re inviting our group as guests of honor to show off to others how close they are to us. Be careful. You might be targeted too, Shuri.”
Not as much as Kuuga, I think. This time, Kuuga is set to participate in an exhibition match as the guest representative. His opponents are supposed to be the captain of the Imperial Guard and the leader of the Knights. He’ll fight the winner of their match. The exhibition match will take place on a special stage built in the courtyard.
“It’s almost time, isn’t it?” “Yeah, I don’t mind fighting either of them, but it depends on how they play it.” “Actually, Gungrave asked me to do something too.” “Oh? What’s that?” “He wants me to make dessert for the dignitaries at the exhibition match.”
You see, in this world, dessert are apparently a luxury that only nobles eat. So I decided to make a cheesecake.
“Here, Kuuga. Please try this first.” “Is this cheese? When I think of cheese, I can only imagine it as a snack with alcohol.”
Cheese is a versatile ingredient, good for both meals and dessert. When I made this into a cheese hamburger steak, Lill became even more hooked.
“This… the bottom is firm, and the top is slightly soft.” “Cut from the top with the spoon, and include the base too. Eat it all together.”
Kuuga took a bite to try it out.
“This is… incredibly delicious. I always thought dessert were supposed to be just sweet.” “There’s hardly any sugar in this. I wanted to bring out the natural deliciousness and sweetness of the cheese and flour.” “I see. I actually like this kind of sweet.”
Kuuga seems to be full of energy now, which is great.
When I served the cheesecake at the exhibition match, it seemed to be well-received by both the Knights and the Imperial Guard, as well as the royalty and high-ranking officials.
“This sweet is delicious.” “It goes well with tea.” “Indeed. Who made this?” “I heard it was made by the cook of Sir Gungrave, who was invited as a guest today.” “Oh my…”
Gungrave and some high-ranking officials are talking about something, but it doesn’t seem to concern me much, so I focused on serving.
By the way, in the exhibition match, the leaders of the Knights and Imperial Guard fought Kuuga together, and Kuuga won decisively with just two strikes. Cutting through swords isn’t something a normal human can do, is it?

Not as much as Kuuga, I think.
