Kuuga’s achievements are incredible. On the battlefield, he has become like a demon god, slicing through enemies along with their armor and swords. You never know what might trigger someone’s talents to blossom. I wonder, what could be the trigger? Seeing this, the infantry unit members have been encouraged and started to advance to the front lines. It would be great if they could return without injuries, but I suppose that’s not always possible.
It’s Shuri here. Lately, I’ve been wanting to make all sorts of things. What’s that? I’m too laid-back? Well, I’ve always been like this. After mapo tofu and cheesecake, the next thing I want to make is obvious. Something I couldn’t make before due to lack of ingredients and knowledge. That’s right, it’s curry. I’ve been struggling with the subtle combinations of spices. It’s truly a cosmic endeavor. Or was that something else? Of course, I eat all the failed attempts myself. But this has led to an unexpected problem. Even if it’s a failure, curry is still curry. The devilish aroma that tickles the nostrils has started to attract Arius to my back as I experiment at night.
“Arius, what are you doing over there?”
I’m calling out, but there’s no response. It’s so obvious, yet she’s being stubborn! Her body is sticking out from behind the tree, what’s the point in being so persistent? By the way, I’m only calling out to Arius, but Tegue is up in the tree, Kuuga is watching from afar, and somehow Lill is under the ground. I guess she dug a hole to hide. And in the nearby tents, people from various units have gathered, not to eavesdrop, but to sniff the air and wait. It’s the first time I’ve used the phrase “sniff the air.”
“Hmm, the curry powder is still tricky…”
The curry powder blend is the main issue. Normally, you’d sauté the ingredients, add water and bring it to a boil, then add the roux. Come to think of it, I don’t know how to make the roux. I’ve combined different roux before to change the flavor, though.
“Ah… I guess this one’s no good either…”
Another failure. The color and thickness are lacking. It’s more like an incomplete soup curry. I still haven’t figured out the best blend for the curry powder. I guess I’ll need to research a bit more. Of course, I’ll eat the failed curry myself. I only made one serving, so cleanup is easy. But the people behind me want to eat it. I won’t let them. I can’t let them eat failed attempts. I serve myself a plate. Hmm, it lacks sweetness. And thickness. It’s not up to my standards yet.
“““Ahhh…!!!”””
I hear cries, but I ignore them. Let’s be a bit mischievous.
“Since there was no response when I called out earlier, I guess no one’s here. If no one’s here, I don’t need to let anyone taste it~”
The trees and ground are trembling. Are they angry?
“Besides, it’s a failed attempt anyway. I couldn’t possibly let anyone eat it.”
I’ll add that as a follow-up.
The next battle isn’t actually a battle. What I mean is, I’ve been chosen as a negotiator. The location is a snowy region. It’s the place where Arius melted all the mountain snow last year. It feels like we’re going around the same places as last year, but connections can form from things like this, so we can’t dismiss it. Speaking of connections, mine are, well, quite unusual. Why am I in another world anyway? There’s no point in thinking about it, so I just keep walking on the snowy path.
“Gungrave, what’s the purpose of this negotiation?” “If you let me eat the dishes you’ve been experimenting with every night, I’ll tell you.”
What, Gungrave?! Were you always this kind of character?! That light of madness in your eyes, it’s not something you should have!
“That’s almost complete, so please wait a bit longer.” “Alright. This time, we’re negotiating for magic crystals. Arturia is a snowy country, but it produces a large amount of magic crystals. It’s a major industry.”
Magic crystals are used as catalysts for magic engineering and magic, and as paint for writing Magi-Spells in magic engineering. Apparently, in places rich in nature, when magical power gathers, it crystallizes and becomes a substance. That’s what magic crystals are. Lill’s inventions and Arius’s staff both need magic crystals. Once magic engineering uses magic crystals with Magi-Spells, they can be used semi-permanently. But magic seems to consume them with continued use. Simply put, using magic wears down and depletes the magic crystals. It must be quite a strain. And now, the number of crystals is decreasing, so we need to replenish them.
That was the plan, at least.
“We have no magic crystals to sell to barbarians like you. Go home.”
When we finally get an audience with the lord, we’re hated like vipers and scorpions. In the audience chamber, a fat father and son are sitting arrogantly. It’s irritating somehow. Being looked down upon by pigs is frustrating.
“Please reconsider. We need them for our activities. In return…” “Well then. If you give those two women as sex slaves for my son, I’ll sell you some.”
Snap. I feel the highest level of irritation. It’s the first time I’ve heard the term “sex slave.” I didn’t know it could make me this angry.
“Papa, I don’t want to sleep with such potato-smelling women!” “Don’t worry, son. We’ll disinfect them properly with drugs.”
Snap. That sound came from the men. The nape of Tegue’s neck is bristling. Kuuga’s aura has transformed into a demon’s visage. The pressure I feel from Gungrave seems to dominate the space like a lion. Me? Well, I’m putting out as much aura as a cat at best. I’m hissing, you know!
“Hm?”
What I see is the fat son eating some sweets.
“That’s…”
I’ve seen that ingredient before. And I’ve seen its application in manga. That’s right, it’s chocolate. Surprisingly, chocolate has already been developed here and has even spread to this snowy country.
“Well, that’s that. I’ll settle for that country girl, even if she’s too rural for my son.” “…That is…” “Gungrave…”
Before I know it, Arius is in tears and Gungrave is shaking with anger. Why don’t they just refuse and leave immediately? Gungrave. There’s no way you can compare the woman you love to an object, right?
“Now, now. Excuse me for a moment.”
I guess it’s time for me to play the fool. Let’s stop kneeling. I don’t want to bow my head to these guys anyway.
“What do you want?” “I am Shuri, the cook of the Gungrave Mercenary Group. Pardon my rudeness, but may I ask one thing? That enchanting sweets the prince is eating, where did you obtain it?”
The king and prince’s brows are furrowed. They must be irritated.
“…It’s from Nouviche. What about it?” “Oh, I see. Just checking.”
I see. So it’s from there. It’ll be easy to get from now on. I guess cocoa and sugar cane might grow in the forests there? I don’t know the details, but let’s make use of this for now.
“Would you allow me to prepare a dish here?” “Why should we let a country cook like you prepare our meal?” “No, no. I’m talking about the prince’s sweets. I’ll transform it into an even more enchanting dish.” “An enchanting dish, you say?”
Oh, they’re taking the bait. I thought these fat father and son would bite when it comes to food talk.
“Yes, just potatoes, carrots, onions, and meat. That’s all I need. With just these, I’ll make a dish several times more delicious than that confection.” “…Interesting. A meal with chocolate and those ingredients? Go ahead and try. If it’s not delicious, we’ll cut off both your arms.” “By all means. Then, I’ll start cooking.”
There’s no way I can lose. Once they prepare the ingredients, it’s time to start cooking. Actually, curry can be combined with chocolate too. After nibbling on the chocolate a bit, I see that I can definitely use this chocolate.
I’ve also got a hint for the curry powder. I realized it when I saw the chocolate. In other words, spices alone aren’t enough. Of course, I’ve found the right spice blend through practice. But to make curry like in Japan, there are a few more things we need to add. Add butter and honey, use flour for thickness and sweetness, and add bouillon for flavor. Through research and practice, I’ve found a satisfactory blend for thickness and sweetness too. Add one piece of chocolate to that and stir well. Put the lid on, simmer for a bit, and it’s done. When I made stew, I just made something that would fill stomachs and was edible at a decent level, but with curry, I’m particular.
“…What is that disgusting colored dish?”
The king is totally put off. He only watched while it was being made. How rude. This is Japanese curry, popular with adults and children alike.
“Now, now, please give it a try.” “…Well, alright.”
Kukuku. Looks like they’ve fallen into my trap. The moment I lift the lid, everyone here will be captivated by the aroma. Ah, what a nice smell.
“This is…”
Both the king and prince are smelling it with surprised faces. That’s right. Homemade curry roux allows you to control even the aroma. Captains behind me. You’ve been smelling this every night, haven’t you?
“Please, help yourself.” “Hmm, well…”
When I serve it on a plate, the king eats without any hesitation. He didn’t even check for poison.
“This is…?!”
The king’s eyes widen in surprise.
“That’s right. My kitchen knife skills aren’t too shabby, are they?” “Ugh…!!”
I show off my kitchen knife a bit with a smug face. The king looks frustrated but doesn’t say it’s not delicious. Well, you can’t say this dish isn’t delicious.
“Please, prince, you too.” “Mmm!”
The prince eats with sparkling eyes.
“It’s delicious! I never knew chocolate could become so tasty!” “Thank you very much.” “Papa, I want this cook more than that woman!” “T-That’s…”
The king is really averting his eyes now.
“You can make this by combining this powder with chocolate. I’d be happy to give it to you.” “Really?!” “In exchange, we’d like some magic crystals.” “Papa!” “B-Be quiet! …What’s your real purpose?”
The king is glaring at me intensely, but I’m not scared. He hasn’t stopped eating the curry, you know.
“As I said, we want magic crystals. Please sell them to us at the market price.” “…Fine. In exchange, forget about my son trying to recruit you.”
Huh? That’s the condition?
“Sure, that’s fine.”
And with that, we got the magic crystals.
As we’re leaving. Everyone’s saying how great it turned out, but I’m not satisfied. On the way from the castle to the campsite, I decided to do something.
“Gungrave.” “Oh, Shuri. You really saved us…?!”
I hit him. It was more like a light slap, though. Even this guy’s cheeks are hard.
“Why didn’t you object immediately? Which is more important, the person you love or some stones?! You shouldn’t have to agonize to the point of making her cry!!”
After saying that, I quickly returned to the campsite. The captains behind me are dumbfounded, but I leave them behind.
After that, I spent the night nervously. After all, I hit the commander. I might get fired. What should I do? If I get fired, I’ll have no job and no one to rely on. Maybe I should go to Nouviche… No, no, I can’t go back there after putting on such airs. I was feeling all anxious like that.
The next day. Gungrave came to thank me with a refreshed look on his face.
“Thanks to you, I realized something important. Thank you.”
I’m glad. I didn’t get fired. And apparently, he officially proposed to Arius. Since we’ve come this far, I’d like to see them have a proper wedding ceremony. I think I’ll start planning it.
