Even though they say they’ll have Hero Ryūgūin conquer the Time Dungeon, without the actual ability to back it up, those words are nothing but empty promises. Even if they were to bring along another capable person, taking someone who would just be dead weight along would serve no purpose other than to punish Ryūgūin.
Of course, many people want to use the exploration of the newly constructed most challenging dungeon as justification to send him to his death.
However, they cannot ignore the other young man’s plea to 「let him live and atone for his crimes,」 so for now, they decide to put him through one month of training, just like the other young man, before sending him to the Time Dungeon as originally planned.
However, even with the rare skill 「5x Growth Rate,」 to accomplish anything in one month would require completing training equivalent to what Yamada Ichiro had overcome. After much discussion among many people, Hero Ryūgūin is assigned training almost identical to what Yamada underwent.
After being captured, Ryūgūin becomes docile. However, as one might expect, this is just his usual act of playing innocent and does not stem from any real remorse.
He only properly participates in the training on the first day. Even then, he passes out before completing even half of that first day’s training, and doesn’t wake up even when powerful healing magic is cast on him.
Yes, as you all probably already realize. It is his specialty: feigning illness. Unfortunately, he has talent for acting.
In other words, while he pretends to be unconscious, the Sisters continue to cast healing magic on him multiple times out of concern.
He is foolish. There is no way they wouldn’t find out.
Once discovered early on, he shows no signs of remorse within a week and ends up receiving harsh punishment.
◇◇◇
「Noooooooo! Whyyyyyy!」
That day, Hero Ryūgūin’s screams echo throughout the Crater Church’s Grand Cathedral in the royal capital. It is exactly one week after he began his training.
「Somebody, help meeeee! Don’t abandon me to dieeeeee!」
He begs for help, but no one comes to his aid.
「[Precept of Temperance (Gluttoniaphobia)]」
The light that had ensnared Ryūgūin at the royal castle strikes him again.
「Stoooooop!」
His daily pleasure now consists only of meals, as his sexual desires have already been sealed. However, even that—
「Oh Ryūgūin, you’re such a fool. When I say I’ll do something, I do it. From today onwards, you’ll only be able to eat the bare minimum. Did I mention this before? This can’t be undone, you know.」
Gilbert laughs at Ryūgūin, who is sobbing and wailing.
「Welcome to the world of temperance.」
◇◇◇
However, no matter how much punishment he receives, having never once experienced putting effort into anything—be it studies, sports, or hobbies—and lacking Yamada’s kind of determination, it is impossible for Ryūgūin to complete the same training.
This becomes apparent when there are only two weeks of training remaining. Gilbert, who resigned as cardinal after that incident and remained in the royal capital as the High Priest in charge of Ryūgūin, along with various other church officials and Madison, gather once again to discuss Ryūgūin’s treatment.
The discussion itself ends quickly, thanks to Gilbert’s smooth facilitation. To cut to the conclusion, they agree that Gilbert will take responsibility and use items that are considered taboo.
◇◇◇
From the next day, a black collar is fitted around Ryūgūin’s neck. The collar is a one-off item customized specifically for Ryūgūin by Gilbert and his associates. Three stones are embedded in the collar. Each stone carries a different effect. One stone has the effect of completely removing fear, another has the effect of preventing the feeling of fatigue, and the last stone has the effect of bringing about an intense sense of euphoria. Every time training begins, he is made to wear Gilbert’s black collar.
「No, not that, I don’t want it, nooooo!」
When strong men hold him down as he shakes his head in resistance and force the collar on him, Ryūgūin transforms into what seems like a completely different person each time.
He truly becomes like a different person, and when someone commands 「Go! Ryūgūin!」 he charges into groups of monsters with a heroic battle cry and remarkable courage.
However, while Gilbert’s collar is extremely effective, its effects of removing fear and bringing about euphoria lead to misfortune for both Ryūgūin and those dealing with him.
In his fearless and hyped-up state due to the collar’s effects, Ryūgūin hurls aggressive insults at those around him during training, resulting in the addition of yet another precept—[Precept of Diligence (Slothphobia)].
And so, Ryūgūin finally completes six weeks of training, including an additional two weeks beyond what was initially planned. Then, as a final touch, he is given a one-sided Vow Magic that states 「Never run away from exploring the Time Dungeon,」 and he departs the castle with lifeless eyes.
◇◇◇
After that, he returns to Lemone to explore the Time Dungeon. By this time, having spent some time away from the castle, he regains his energy along with his original arrogance, causing the priest assigned by the church to hold his head in his hands.
While the details of his skills aren’t discussed, the incidents he caused are announced: all of his achievements are lies, and he had fabricated everything to his convenience using his authority, framing others while presenting these fabrications as his own accomplishments.
For the town’s residents, who already had nothing but negative impressions of Ryūgūin, they had only endured his presence because he was the hero who had saved their country. Yet now it has been announced that all of his achievements were lies.
There are still many people in Lemone who cannot recover from being hurt by his foolish actions. For the townspeople who now know the truth, Ryūgūin is no longer a hero but merely an enemy. As soon as Ryūgūin arrives in town, it is only natural that he is met with shouts of 「Get out of here!」 and stones thrown at his head.
◇◇◇
Ryūgūin ends up living in a small town—or rather, a village—near Lemone. The plan is to use the village as a base while exploring the Time Dungeon. However, only Ryūgūin stays in the village with the priest dispatched from the church, while the members meant to team up with him are based in Lemone. Although he causes a scene complaining 「Why just me?! You guys should live in this village too!! We’re teammates!!」 the root cause is his own past actions.
While the party members were gathered by the country, as they hear more about Ryūgūin in Lemone, they develop strong negative feelings toward him.
In this way, even before fighting begins, the party is already on the verge of collapse, but being specially selected by the country, they somehow manage to control their feelings and decide to try their best alongside Ryūgūin.
However, this resolve ends with their first exploration. The trigger is, of course, Ryūgūin.
After completing six weeks of training and becoming somewhat capable, Ryūgūin, unable to understand the difference in ability, looks down on and makes fun of the S-rank party members, and ignoring their repeated advice about coordination, he overestimates his own abilities.
When called out for this, he spews insults like 「Are you guys washed-up adventurers who’ve already peaked?」 「I’m going to make my comeback by conquering this place,」 and 「If you don’t have the motivation, then get out of here.」
While the first exploration ends with the party members barely containing themselves, the next day they all quit the party, stating that 「Ryūgūin is not someone we can trust to watch our backs.」
◇◇◇
After the priest assigned to Ryūgūin reports to Gilbert, they contemplate what to do, and as a result, a stern-faced man from the church is immediately sent to the village where Ryūgūin lives.
His purpose is to deliver several items to Ryūgūin’s assigned priest.
One is an orb that allows escape from the dungeon when encountering an unavoidable dungeon boss, another is a miniature version of a teleportation device—created by a certain inventor but still under information control—and the last is a robe that prevents detection by any enemy unless an attack is initiated.
◇◇◇
From the next day, exploration of the Time Dungeon begins with just Ryūgūin and his hidden assigned priest. He is completely cut off from escape routes through surveillance, Vow Magic, and the [Precept of Diligence (Slothphobia)].
However, what happens when they actually enter the Time Dungeon? Similar to last time, things go well at first.
Being only on the first floor, there are few enemies, and their strength isn’t particularly significant. The problem is—
「I’m going in.」
Ryūgūin is full of himself. He thinks he’s different from when he failed before. He’s survived hellish training (at the royal castle) since then. With such confidence, Ryūgūin opens the door to the first floor’s boss room.
◇◇◇
When the priest carrying Ryūgūin on his back is discovered barely alive in the village, Ryūgūin’s hair has turned white from overwhelming fear of death, his equipment is torn to shreds, and two mithril spears are protruding from his body—one through his chest and one through his stomach.
Even now, he still hasn’t managed to clear the first floor.
Perhaps because of this, when he tries to throw everything away and run, he gets caught by the vow and is found unconscious outside the village multiple times.
Recently, it’s said that every time he falls asleep at night, he wakes up screaming. Then, after being dazed for a while, he eventually starts muttering things like 「the spears,」 「the swords,」 「I can’t see,」 「too fast,」 「I’m scared,」 「I’m sorry,」 「Limit Break,」 「Limit, Break,」 「Limit Break Limit Break Limit, Break,」 「It’s no use, help,」 「Someone help me,」 while sobbing quietly.
Well… I’ll refrain from commenting on this.
