When I return from the royal capital, I receive something from the old man Chancellor. It’s a Contact Pearl. At first, I try to politely decline, remembering what Ash said about how rare and valuable it is, but the old man insists, 「Just take it,」 and basically forces it on me.
This item works by registering the owner’s mana and then registering other owners or their Contact Pearl data to enable communication between parties. The one given to me has been set up to allow communication with multiple people besides the sender, the Chancellor—though I’m not sure what kind of discussions led to that arrangement.
While I didn’t intend to acquire a Contact Pearl, it’s not like I don’t use it—actually, I receive fairly frequent communications through it, so even though I’m mostly passive about it, I use it quite regularly.
The other day, I receive a communication from the old Chancellor after quite a while.
『You could come if you wanted to, right, Ichiro?』
「Well…」
『Then why don’t you come!』
Man, when the old guy gets drunk, he keeps pestering me with 「I’ll give you my daughter」 and 「Just meet her once, please」…
「Well, you see…」
While I’m making excuses and trying to brush him off, he declares 「I won’t give up!」 before quickly moving past the small talk, his tone becoming grave. His main topic is about the aftermath of the Ryūgūin incident. According to the old man, while it will take at least a few years for everything to be fully resolved, he’s contacting me because things have reached a certain milestone.
However, the atmosphere bleeding through his voice is far from cheerful.
According to Chancellor Madison, the leading pro-summoning faction that had pushed for the Hero summoning had been a certain ducal house that took custody of Ryūgūin right after we were summoned, under the pretext of looking after him.
The influence of this ducal house, which had been working alongside Chancellor Madison and others to support the royal family, was so strong that it took nearly half a year just to bring them down.
From my perspective, having something done and changed within half a year seems incredibly swift compared to my original world, but perhaps such circumstances differ between worlds.
The ducal house in question, which didn’t quietly accept their punishment, was eventually cornered by a large-scale network of Chancellor Madison’s noble faction, the Crater Church, and merchant houses sympathetic to Saint Mika, until they were completely immobilized both economically and militarily.
Only then did they finally accept the punishment of demotion rather than complete dissolution, on the condition that the house’s leadership and their close relatives would be completely expelled and replaced with government-appointed individuals.
I don’t know what happened to those who were expelled, but judging from Chancellor Madison’s demeanor, I suspect they might not even be alive anymore.
Additionally, many noble houses that had tried to profit from the shadow of that ducal house received appropriate punishment. When the heads of each house stepped down and were expelled, quite a few houses ended up being completely dissolved through brute force after refusing to accept the conditions offered by Chancellor Madison and his allies, which would have allowed them to get away with just a demotion.
And perhaps the biggest development is that King Arcana has decided to step down from the throne in the near future. They plan to educate a promising candidate—the son of King Arcana’s brother—from a ducal house with royal blood, and have him ascend to the throne once he’s properly matured. What about Puffy? Regarding that—
「Things have certainly become quite complicated, haven’t they?」
I sigh, but—
『What are you talking about? I’m not finished yet.』
The story doesn’t end there. The pro-summoning nobles weren’t the only problem.
The pro-summoning faction apparently included church officials as well, even some from the upper echelons. Many of them were judged quite harshly—some were demoted and sent to the countryside, while others were excommunicated from the church altogether, causing significant turmoil.
I also hear that Cardinal Gilbert, who presided over that situation, took full responsibility for the use of forbidden curses and stepped down from his position as cardinal on his own accord.
I think he wasn’t wrong to act according to reason, even while trembling with anger. I’m not confident I could behave like him if I lost someone precious to me.
However, it’s not all bad news for the church. The church’s punishments were carried out extensively and immediately to purge the organization of corruption, which was still better than the high-ranking noble houses, led by the ducal house, that fought back until the very end.
For example, according to the Chancellor, two particularly disgraceful individuals have disappeared without a trace: a cardinal who had obtained his high position through money gained from accepting large donations in exchange for high-level Heal and curse removal magic despite lacking both ability and character, and another cardinal who had repeatedly engaged in foolish actions with him and supported his promotion—their punishment wasn’t even related to the Ryūgūin incident.
After finishing his account of these recent events, the loyal old man concludes with 「Let’s meet again, Ichiro」 and ends the communication.
As a side note, there’s one thing Chancellor Madison barely touched upon.
I know the reason for the church’s swift punishment. I just need to recall how the Pope and other Crater Church members behaved toward Sensei in that throne room. Something must have happened with Sensei afterward. I feel it won’t be long before Sensei tells me everything. I wish she would let me share even a small part of her burden.
