Nelly hurriedly gets ready and wolfs down her breakfast before rushing out of the manor. No one criticizes her poor table manners. If anything, the maids are thrilled, whispering among themselves, 「Look how cool Lady Nelly looks eating so fast!」
Now, there’s a reason why the usually composed Nelly is in such a hurry. She’s a fan of a certain theater troupe. That troupe is performing in her hometown today, and she absolutely cannot miss it. She has been looking forward to this for so long. The thought of entering the theater after the show starts is completely out of the question. She wants to savor every moment, and besides, it would be disrespectful to the performers to arrive late. So she runs. If nothing goes wrong, she’ll make it to the performance with no problem.
That’s when she lets her guard down. Right in front of her, a woman carrying a basket full of fruit collides with a passerby, and the basket overturns. Fruit rolls at her feet.
「Are you alright?」
She can’t just ignore this. Nelly quickly gathers up the fruit and returns it to the woman. She responds to the woman’s 「Thank you so much」 with just a 「Don’t worry about it」 before dashing off toward her destination.
Still okay. Still have time—just as she’s thinking this, a carriage appears from the other direction. Despite this, an inattentive child runs out in front of it, completely oblivious.
「Kyaaaa!」
A woman who witnesses this lets out a scream. Everyone present has a vision of the little boy’s tragic fate. But someone dives in front of the carriage and scoops up the boy. It’s Nelly.
「Phew.」
She lets out a relieved sigh and sets down the dazed boy. The boy finally realizes he nearly died, and his eyes well up with tears, about to burst into crying—
「Don’t cry. You’re okay now.」
When she ruffles the boy’s head, mysteriously, his tears recede.
「Take care now, and be more careful from now on, okay?」
Nelly politely declines the profuse thanks from the boy’s mother who came running in tears, and starts running again.
「Still okay. Should still be okay.」
Nelly mutters to herself, but at this point, such words are just asking for trouble.
「Pochi! Stop right there!」
A large dog, similar to what we’d call a Husky on Earth, comes charging at full speed, with its owner visible in pursuit.
「Ahhh! Really?! Why is this happening?!」
Even as Nelly shouts this—she smoothly scoops up the large dog as they pass each other, and without losing momentum, passes it to its approaching owner—taking the most efficient action possible.
Is today just destined to be one of those days?
While she’s generally unlucky, she periodically has particularly unfortunate days. It’s more than just a jinx or vague feeling—it’s an intuition that’s proven itself remarkably reliable.
The feeling she’s had since jumping out of bed this morning was exactly that sensation of impending misfortune. She’s been trying to ignore it, but with obstacles appearing one after another, she can no longer deny it.
After that, the mishaps continue: helping a child retrieve their balloon caught on an inn’s signboard, helping up an elderly woman who fell right in front of her, apprehending a purse snatcher, and more.
But Nelly manages to resolve each situation with speedrun-like efficiency and somehow makes it to the theater before the performance begins. For a moment, Nelly catches her breath, and after regaining her composure, she mutters 「Thank goodness I made it」 as she’s about to enter the theater—that’s when she spots three young girls.
「Did you find it?」
「No! I looked everywhere we walked, but nothing!」
「Me neither… I couldn’t find it anywhere.」
「The show’s about to start…」
「I’m the one who lost it, so you two should go ahead.」
「But we promised we’d go together!」
「But it’s nowhere to be found… and they’re sold out of same-day tickets…」
Nelly holds her head in her hands. This was absolutely the last situation she wanted to see. Just from this brief exchange, she understands exactly what situation these three girls are in. At this rate, all three of them will end up standing outside the theater together.
This is terrible. This is terrible. This is really terrible.
Because if she has to see this—
「Hey, you three.」
Though Nelly is crying inside, she shows none of it as she turns to the three girls with a smile. The three sad girls look up at her.
「I came to see today’s performance, but something urgent came up that I absolutely can’t miss… Would you like to use my ticket?」
At Nelly’s offer, the three girls’ faces light up with joy, and after expressing their gratitude many times, they enter the theater. She watches them go.
「Ah… I was really looking forward to it too.」
Can’t be helped, can’t be helped, yeah, can’t be helped. She mutters these words in her heart, trying to convince herself. Then she begins to trudge away from the spot.
「Young lady.」
At first, she doesn’t think she’s the one being called.
「Young lady.」
She’s the only one around. When she turns toward the voice, there stands the elderly woman who had fallen earlier and whom Nelly had helped up.
「I was watching. My, my, to think there are people like you in this world.」
As she says this, she gives a knowing look.
「Are you the person from earlier…?」
「Thank you for before. I was troubled because you seemed to be in such a hurry that I couldn’t properly thank you. I’m glad I met you again.」
「It wasn’t anything special. Please don’t worry about it.」
「There aren’t many people who can do what you consider ‘nothing special.’ And even now, you just… right?」
The elderly woman had witnessed the entire scene of Nelly giving her ticket to the three girls. That’s why she called out to her.
「This isn’t exactly a thank you gift, but…」
She hands Nelly a piece of paper. On it is—
「This is… a ticket… and it’s for a VIP seat!!」
Though Nelly tries to quickly return it, saying she couldn’t possibly accept such a thing, the elderly woman refuses to take it back.
「Don’t be shy, take it. It’s fine, I don’t need a ticket. Shall we walk together for a bit?」
Walk where? The question crosses Nelly’s mind, but the elderly woman’s will proves surprisingly firm as she takes Nelly’s hand and strides forward purposefully. She shows the ticket at the entrance and follows the elderly woman.
「This is where we part for now. Let’s talk again after it’s over. You enjoy yourself to the fullest, young lady.」
The elderly woman escorts Nelly to the VIP room, then enters a room marked 「Staff Only.」
◇◇◇
While it’s a strange feeling, it’s not at all unpleasant. She’s been looking forward to this performance for so long, and it’s absolutely thrilling. Though you wouldn’t guess it from her usual character, she’s internally squealing with delight.
As Nelly rises from her seat after the performance ends, she reflects on how life can be full of surprises. Just as she’s about to leave, the elderly woman appears before her again.
As they talk, an astonishing truth comes to light. It turns out that the elderly woman is actually the owner and producer of the theater troupe. Nelly is taken along again, and ends up living through a dream-like experience—shaking hands with the performers, getting their autographs, and even participating in their after-party.
However, all of this pales in comparison to the elderly woman’s subsequent offer. As the party reaches its peak, near the end of the celebration, Nelly is led outside by the elderly woman. There, looking into Nelly’s eyes, she says:
「Nelly dear, how would you like to become an actor with our troupe? I truly believe you would excel.」
Faced with these unexpected words, Nelly finds herself at a loss for what to say. Suddenly, along with her surprise, she feels her perspective expanding.
That’s right. Nelly has been released from her duty of protecting the Sealed Dungeon.
Now, she can become anything. From here on, her future lies in her own choices.
