The Hidden Mountain, a den of monsters, is no joke. By the seventh station, monsters that would normally require a full raid party in an MMORPG roam freely—creatures that defy human comprehension.
There’s this massive boar-type monster that once served as a test subject for Sena’s 「Stinger.」 Yamada calls this particular monster Okkotonushi, and if such a gigantic monster were ever released into the towns below, it would inevitably result in countless casualties and total destruction.
However, this particular monster is officially known as a 「Stamp Boar,」 a common monster found at the eighth station of Hidden Mountain.
Yes, 「common.」 There’s nothing surprising about it. There are many Stamp Boars on Hidden Mountain, and there are plenty of even more fearsome monsters as well.
Indeed, calling Hidden Mountain’s environment 「harsh」 would be an understatement. Given these circumstances, it would be better for them to abandon their absurd goal of climbing Hidden Mountain.
However, their hearts, tempered like legendary swords in divine territory, never break. Instead, they shine even brighter as they struggle onward at this very moment toward the summit where he lives.
◇◇◇
Eris and Orphelia face off against a snake monster—a monstrous serpent that exists in the upper levels of Hidden Mountain. It’s of extraordinary size—if stretched out straight, it might reach the height of a skyscraper, with a thickness reminiscent of a thousand-year-old tree as it slithers across the ground. The monster is called 「Heavy Serpent.」
While we say it 「slithers,」 this is on a completely different level from ordinary slithering. Every time the Heavy Serpent’s massive body moves, it tears up the surroundings as if hit by a tornado. Despite its enormous size, this snake monster moves with surprising agility and seemingly endless stamina, wildly swinging its centrifugal force-powered tail in all directions.
If it were just about its massive size, these two would probably be able to handle it somehow. What makes this impossible is that this particular snake monster possesses an incredibly troublesome ability.
As the two skillfully continue to dodge the monster’s violent storm of attacks, the snake, perhaps growing impatient, raises its massive body. Its body gleams in the sunlight. Unlike normal snakes, its obsidian-like body sparkles. At that moment—
「Orphe!!」
Eris, who has escaped the snake’s attack range, shouts. Her intention is to urge retreat. But Orphelia doesn’t back down. As the snake brings down its upper body to press against the ground where Orphelia stands— Orphelia raises her dual blades vertically and—
「Twin Peaks!」
She counters with a deadly strike. However, the snake’s slam, clearly enhanced by some kind of power beyond its natural weight, manifests like a natural disaster.
「You idiot!!」
Eris shouts, her face red. It was a close call. The petite girl holds Orphelia tight in both arms. Eris, still carrying Orphelia, flees at full speed from the snake monster’s presence.
◇◇◇
Having retreated to safety, the two catch their breath. For a while, neither speaks, but Eris is the one who breaks the silence.
「That was rash. You know better than that.」
Orphelia instinctively bears her teeth.
「But—」
「But what? Please don’t make excuses. I don’t think I can control my anger right now.」
Realizing that the usually mild-mannered Eris is truly angry, Orphelia abandons her forming excuse, bites her lip, and looks down.
「…Sorry.」
Seeing Orphelia’s expression, mixed with impatience, frustration, and feelings of inadequacy, Eris lets out another sigh.
「I’m sorry too. I went too far.」
They both understand each other’s feelings. Because her (Orphelia’s) feelings are the same ones that Eris carries.
Until now, the two had been making steady progress toward conquering Hidden Mountain, but their pace came to a complete halt at the seventh station. It’s been about ten days since they reached the seventh station, and the two have been struggling against the numerous monsters that exist there.
