With determined expressions, the two warriors ready their swords in perfect sync and charge toward the Heavy Serpent.
「UWOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH!!」 they both cry out.
Once again, their battle cry echoes through the area with the desperate energy of a manga’s rushed final chapter. Good grief.
「SHAAAAAAAAAAA!!」
An ear-piercing shriek erupts from the serpent monster. Its massive body, hard as obsidian, thrashes about at an impossibly fast speed. The ground tears apart wherever its huge form touches, and massive boulders are tossed and shattered like children’s toys.
Last time, the two warriors had to retreat before this monster that combined both speed and hardness, but this time is different. They have quite literally been through hell since then.
Eris takes point, darting forward with light steps. Orphelia follows close behind. They alternately slip into the Heavy Serpent’s blind spots. The serpent, which can sense objects through heat and touch as well as sight, cannot ignore their movements as they constantly slip into its blind spots. This prevents it from fully unleashing its trademark violence of coiling and striking.
Even so, its overwhelming power, explosive speed disproportionate to its size, and massive body remain formidable. The two warriors can barely manage to avoid its attacks.
However, they aren’t just blindly defending. The two are watching for an opportunity to take down the serpent monster in a single strike. Their minds flash back to their harsh training from just half a month ago.
◇◇◇
Together with Talisman Sena that Sena had summoned, they are busily making countless fist-sized mud balls by kneading the soil behind the cabin. Though it only takes five or ten minutes, they end up making well over a hundred or two hundred balls.
Orphelia watches the scene intently, wondering what they’re doing. The answer soon becomes clear.
「Orphe, come here.」
Sena calls out. When Orphelia approaches, Sena gently touches her eyelids, channeling some kind of power into them. Orphelia shivers at the unfamiliar sensation.
「The stronger someone is said to be, the better they are at circulating mana through their body. The circulated mana activates the physical body, generating explosive power. This flow of mana probably isn’t widely recognized, so I don’t know its proper name. Sensei would casually call it things like ‘Battle Spirit’ or ‘Mana Flow.’ However, while it may not be recognized, many people do it unconsciously. You’re no exception.」
「I do it too?」
Orphelia asks, and Sena nods.
「Is that different from Body Enhancement Magic?」
「Similar but fundamentally different. Body Enhancement Magic releases mana as a spell and then applies it back to the body, so it’s not only inefficient but also has low flexibility.」
「Flexibility?」
「Yes. But before I explain further, try cutting this.」
Sena throws one of her handmade mud balls at Orphelia, slightly faster than a casual game of catch. Orphelia instantly draws her twin swords and slashes once, twice—CLANG—her blades bounce off with a metallic sound.
「This is really hard. What is it?」
Orphelia shakes her hands, apparently numbed from the impact.
「Mud balls I made with special care. The materials are the soil from behind the cabin and adamantite.」
Adamantite!? Orphelia’s expression twitches at this unbelievable revelation.
She’s seen many impossible things before. At this point, it shouldn’t be surprising anymore, right? Yeah, that must be it—Orphelia forces herself to accept this reality.
「Now try cutting this one.」
Sena tosses another mud ball lightly, as if having Orphelia practice batting.
「This one I can—」
Orphelia manages to slash it into four pieces with two quick cuts.
「As you just demonstrated. You can cut these mud balls, but when they move quickly, you can’t.」
Though thinking these hardly qualify as 「mud balls」 anymore, Orphelia keeps quiet and listens to Sena’s words.
「Your power of Sight is remarkable. You probably unconsciously see where the opponent’s weak points are and which lines to cut to slice through an object.」
「That’s your talent,」 Sena declares.
「If you can freely control the flow of mana in your body, you won’t be limited to straightforward enhancement like Body Enhancement Magic. Instead, you can strengthen your body however you want. This will not only give you extraordinary physical strength but also enhance your eyes, taking your power of Sight to the next level.」
Sena has shown her a concrete path forward. Orphelia shivers as she realizes she now has a clear direction for growth.
「From now on, you can become much, much stronger. That’s what this training is for.」
「Boss, please teach me.」
Orphelia bows her head. This training to freely control the flow of energy in the body is the same path Yamada Ichiro had taken. Ichiro watches their exchange from afar and mutters 「good luck.」
◇◇◇
From then on, Orphelia is forced to continuously cut through Sena’s mud balls.
It starts with slow tosses like batting practice, but gradually Sena increases the speed of her throws. Eventually, the mud balls are coming at speeds that would make even Chapman run away barefooted.
Of course, she misses sometimes—or rather, most of the time she can’t cut them. That’s precisely why the goal of this training is to achieve a perfect success rate.
And so, from early morning, she continues the training of slashing through these 「mud balls,」 no matter how exhausted she becomes. When she can no longer move, she drinks potions or receives treatment from Sena (implications unclear), and though Orphelia collapses many times, she grits her teeth and continues training. In a word, it’s hell, but she eventually manages to complete it… though at the cost of wearing down her spirit.
Meanwhile, the other disciple, Eris, also undergoes intense training with Ichiro. However, this is something she has long wished for.
That’s why she never complains—in fact, whenever Ichiro suggests 「Let’s take a break,」 she pulls on his arm saying 「Master! I can still go on! Let’s continue!」 and begs to continue training. Having developed a closeness to Ichiro second only to Sena and Sensei, and with both her mental and physical strength recovered, Eris is in absolutely top form. Ichiro feels relieved seeing her condition and breathes a sigh of relief.
「Alright. Since you seem fine, let’s try some even better training!」
He says with a smile (implications unclear).
◇◇◇
Growing impatient with the prolonged stalemate, the serpent monster launches a ferocious charge at the two warriors. Eris and Orphelia instantly grasp each other’s intentions. Neither backs down—instead, Eris charges head-on toward the serpent’s attack at maximum speed.
Just when it seems they’ll collide, Eris avoids the serpent by a paper-thin margin without losing any speed—SCREEEEEECH—and runs along its massive body with Gram’s blade pressed against it. However, she can’t completely cut through the Heavy Serpent’s outer skin, which surpasses even adamantite in hardness—she only manages to scrape it—but that’s enough. The serpent monster’s movements are already in Eris’s hands. Anyone watching could see it.
Her movements as she scrapes the serpent’s exterior are fluid—she wraps around, grasps, and utilizes the serpent’s massive body and speed without killing it—and with a fierce battle cry, Eris:
「HAAAAAH!!」
Launches the Heavy Serpent’s massive body upward. The movement is incredibly natural and smooth. The serpent’s huge body is launched high into the sky by its own speed and the energy of its massive form.
「Orphe!!」
Eris’s signal call.
「I know!! This is where we prove our worth as women!!」
The serpent’s massive body begins to fall, obeying gravity. Timing her move, Orphelia readies her twin blades. And then—
「Duo!」
Just before the serpent’s body crashes into the ground, Orphelia’s technique bisects it—yet the serpent’s life force doesn’t fade as it writhes—Orphelia’s speed increases as she maintains her momentum—ignoring this, the bisected serpent opens its massive jaws to their limit to swallow her—
「Bite!」
But it fails.
「GAAAAAAHHH!!」
Orphelia roars, countering with a sword strike mimicking a dragon’s jaws.
Bite versus Bite. The victory goes to—
「SHARIIIIIIIIIII!」
The Heavy Serpent completely swallows Orphelia and lets out a victory shriek—or so it seems for an instant, when the serpent’s massive body briefly vibrates, and then—
「DASHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!」
Orphelia’s war cry echoes through the area. Simultaneously, the serpent monster’s body begins to split vertically at a steady pace from its head to where its tail had been. A normal person might have lowered their guard thinking 「it’s over,」 but Orphelia shows no such carelessness. Running at full speed once again, Orphelia leaps in from the right rear of the serpent’s head, and:
「Diamond Thrust!」
Unleashes her ultimate finishing move. BOBOBOBO—the vertically split serpent’s head is further carved out in a diamond shape. There is no death cry—it’s a complete finishing blow.
