Chapter 278

◇◇◇

「That went well. Eris controlled that massive body perfectly, and Orphe managed to cut through the Obsidian Snake’s body—which is harder than adamantite—quite impressively,」

Ichiro is the first to praise the two as they return.
Sena adds,

「Well done. You both did admirably.」

The two—Orphelia and Eris—are momentarily speechless at receiving such unconditional praise, having braced themselves for criticism.

「What’s wrong?」

Sena tilts her head at their slow response.

「Well, you know…」

Orphelia seeks agreement from Eris.

「True, but, well…」

Eris’s response is equally vague.

「You’re both acting strange. If you have something to say, say it,」 Sena says.

「Ah, haha, well, we just didn’t expect such unconditional praise,」 Orphelia explains.

「Yes, that’s right—wait, um…」 Eris trails off.

Sena appears somewhat sulky.

「I know how hard you both work.
Of course I’m going to praise you.」

Orphelia wears a sheepish expression.

「Don’t be angry, Boss. It’s just that you’re usually so strict, we thought we’d get criticized this time too.」

Both she and Eris recall memories of the intense training they endured, and the time they (led by Orphelia) tried to ambush Sena, only to be thoroughly beaten and caught, then subjected to special training until they were in tears.
Orphelia silently sheds a tear in her heart, thinking, 「It’s amazing I’m still alive.」

「Listen, the reason Sena’s training is so harsh—」

Ichiro sighs and tries to interject, but Sena shakes her head saying, 「No, let me explain myself.」

「Yes, the training I put you through was harsh.」

Sena’s expression carries a hint of melancholy.

「I know how fragile human life is.」

She continues, weaving her words as if recalling something.
Reminiscence—perhaps she’s remembering someone from her past.

「You’ll continue to walk alongside Ichiro, won’t you?
If so, you’ll keep walking a dangerous path.
Even this time, you nearly died several times fighting just one snake.」

She asks, 「You understand, don’t you?」

「Difficulties are everywhere, and death is always lurking.」

They’ve had many close calls with death before.
Just thinking back a bit, there were incredible monsters like the ones in the Sealed Dungeon and the Tri-Head Dragon. There were moments when they miraculously escaped death just as their lives were flashing before their eyes.

「I don’t want you to die.」

She declares, looking them both in the eyes.
At that moment—

「BOSS!」

Overwhelmed with emotion, Orphelia throws herself at Sena’s small frame. Sena responds by patting Orphelia’s back as if to say, 「What can you do?」
Meanwhile, Eris and Ichiro, who were slower to react, exchange glances.
They nod to each other, and Ichiro spreads his arms wide. Then Eris—

「SHIFU!」

She leaps into Ichiro’s chest.

「So, Shifu and Boss, I’m going to try even harder from now on. Right, Eris?」

Eris responds by giving Orphelia a sidelong glance.
It’s understandable why.
She had been dragged away from enjoying her day off, subjected to intense training, and forced to fight a giant monster snake.
Eris keeps getting caught up in Orphelia’s schemes.
But still—

「Well, it’s fine. I’ll stay with you since I’d be worried about Orphe on her own.」

Eris says with a hint of embarrassment.

「Besides, I need to work hard for my own sake too, so I can handle things on my own.」

Eris smiles like a flower in bloom.

That day, Ichiro prepares a special meal, and they hold a small celebration to commemorate defeating the giant snake.
Though it’s just the four of them—Ichiro, Sena, Eris, and Orphelia—everyone is completely satisfied with the gathering.

The next day, when Orphelia and Eris wake up, they return to town of their own accord, despite Sena having previously exempted them from staying at the cabin.

About two months later, they would manage to reach the cabin at Hidden Mountain on their own, but that’s another story.
