Sensei has gone traveling with Mika, and although she’s come back to visit a few times, she always leaves the next day. It looks like it’ll still be a while before she properly returns to the mountain. As for Eris and Orphe, they’ll need a bit more time before they can make it to the cabin on their own.
So, with all that going on, only Sena and I are left at the cabin, each of us spending our time as we please.
Sena sits properly, reading a book while writing something on paper. As for me, I’m busy practicing some entertainment skills. They say that having a special talent can help you out in life. If you have the right skill to show off at parties or during awkward silences, you can make a grand presentation, get a great reaction, and warm up that chilly atmosphere in no time.
「Hey, check this out!」
This trick is really coming along! Oh yeah! This is awesome! With that in mind, I call out to Sena to show her. Sena puts down her book and pen, straightens her posture, and turns to face me.
「You know, I’ve been practicing this trick that I can use for performances.」
Using Light Magic, I light up all ten of my fingers and quickly stand up.
「Otaku dance!」
I spin my arms around and, along with a rather unique dance, make five lines of light trail from each hand. It’s unmistakably an otaku dance. However, despite my confidence in this performance piece, Sena just stares blankly, completely lost. Oh no! The atmosphere is freezing cold! But I don’t give up. I clear my throat and try again.
「And next, here’s what it looks like when a robot powers up in a robot anime—」
Standing straight, I use Light Magic to make just my eyes glow for one or two seconds, then pose as if I’m about to launch from a base, calling out 「Ichiro, launching!」 while slightly bending my knees.
「Ichiro, what a waste of skill…」
「Oof…」
Sadly, she’s exactly right. I managed to create light in precise locations like my fingers and eyes without using a staff or any other catalyst, and without even chanting. Ever since the Ainika battle, my magical abilities have improved significantly. I can now handle not just formal magic, but manipulate light itself pretty freely. To be honest, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call it an incredible technical achievement. And yet—
「Man… I really thought that would get a better reaction…」
This is so sad. As I slump my shoulders in disappointment, Sena comes to my side and pats me on the shoulder.
「It’s okay. What matters for a performance piece is timing. Whether it gets a reaction or not isn’t that important. What’s important is having friends or an audience who can turn even a flop into laughter.」
「What kind of advice is that?!」
As I’m shocked by her serious advice, the Contact Pearl sitting in the corner of the room makes a sound. I immediately activate it, and—
「Hello?」
A beautiful, gentle woman’s voice comes through.
「It’s me. Are you both there?」
「Sensei! It’s been a while!」
Sena is already by my side. Well, Sena is Sensei’s biggest fan after all.
「Indeed, it has been a while.」
「What made you contact us today?」
「Oh, nothing much, I just wanted to hear son-in-law and Sena’s voices…」
There’s something melancholic about the way she says it. For a moment I wonder, 「Sensei… did something happen?」 but then it clicks. Thinking back carefully, there was definitely some mischief in her voice.
「What are you really trying to say? Just get to the point.」
「How lonely it makes me when you speak that way. Since when did my son-in-law become such a heartless man…」
Well, whatever, Sensei continues.
「I’ve been away for a while, but I’m thinking of coming back there.」
「Sensei!」 Sena exclaims joyfully.
「I plan to return in about a week, so please prepare accordingly. I’m looking forward to having lots of conversations with Sena.」
We’ve been entrusted with this task. If we’ve been asked, there’s no helping it.
「Leave it to us. We’ll have your favorite foods ready and waiting.」
「We’ll be waiting, Sensei.」
「Yes, yes, very good. And son-in-law?」
「What is it?」
「When you’re preparing the food, make sure you make apple pie too.」
Sensei emphasizes 「I’m counting on you!」 「It’s absolutely necessary!」 「Absolutely, okay?」 multiple times before ending the communication. That’s just like Sensei, doing things at her own pace.

Time flies by quickly after that, and it’s now the day before Sensei’s return. Just as I’m thinking about starting the preparations, I get a message from Anon. He says, 「I’d like to talk about something that’s difficult to discuss through the Orb. Could we meet?」 I can’t refuse when Anon asks for help. I immediately agree, get Sena’s approval, and hurry down to town.
