The location is the royal castle. I change into a soldier’s outfit to avoid being spotted by the attackers and blend into the interior. I secretly change into appropriate clothes and disguise myself as someone who belongs in the castle.
I wanted to see Puffy’s face, but if someone saw me going to meet her, it would cause problems. So I restrain myself. Instead—
The ones protecting the royal castle are myself, selected members from the Royal Knight Order, and the sisters from Clartel.
I exchange greetings with Siesta, the Knight Commander Eris Papa, and the vice commanders, and briefly go over the plan. There’s a lot to catch up on, but all that can wait until after we’ve prevented all the attacks.
I won’t harbor unnecessary sentiments—not seeing her—maybe that’s better for me too. As planned, I leave their protection to Eris Papa and the others.
And so, I wait alone in a room. I carefully read the atmosphere within the royal castle. I can tell that Puffy and the others have just opened the entrance to the castle’s secret passage and stepped in.
As I wait in preparation for the attack—my thoughts naturally turn to Sena.
「I want to go out into the outside world a little.」
Sena murmured while facing forward.
「After this matter is over. Ichiro, will you help me?」
For a moment, I couldn’t understand what she was saying, but I quickly responded, 「Of course.」 I can only guess what her state of mind is or what triggered this, but one thing is certain. She mustered up courage. A tremendous amount of courage.
I found her so endearing that I lifted her from her position of leaning her back against me and turned her to face me.
「Ichiro, why are you crying…」
「I’m not crying. This is, you know, sweat from my heart.」
As I said this, I embraced her tightly. That’s right. Sena decided to move forward with time that had long been stagnant. It must have been a painful and difficult decision. But she took that first step.
My thoughts are pulled back to the present. Right now, bandits are infiltrating the castle. There are six… no, seven people. The moment we finish counting their numbers, the lights around us suddenly go out. Darkness is forcibly created by some kind of power.
However, even in such darkness, I can clearly sense their confusion. The people who should be in the castle aren’t there. As expected.
The one coming to the royal castle is either Unknown or Darkness Hound—I had predicted the former, but it seems my prediction was wrong.
I leap out of the room using their presence as a guide, and as I start running, I investigate the nature of the darkness.
To check if it’s due to an item—I activate the Item Effect Jammer Ring—but there’s no reaction and the light doesn’t return.
「If that’s the case—」
Next—I speak to the Guardian Sword Refaia sleeping within me. I’m going to use Skill Defender now. Please lend me your power to protect those who need protection.
「Activate.」
However—
「No reaction, huh?」
Even when Skill Defender was amplified by Guardian Sword Refaia, it showed no effect. This means that this forced darkness is not due to a skill. Thinking by process of elimination, its true nature must be magic.
「Light.」
I try to illuminate the surroundings with an existing basic spell—but it fails.
「This is…」
I sense something odd. I try to illuminate the surroundings with Light again, but it fails—however, on the second attempt, I clearly understand the nature of the strange feeling. When activating the spell, I feel my light magic particles dispersing, no, being drawn in. This is a movement that wouldn’t normally occur. I see—I vaguely understand the mechanism creating the darkness.
But then, time’s up. I sense the dense presence of the first assassin right in front of me.
