Chapter 302

◇◇◇

Priest Leito directs a compassionate gaze toward the girl in the coffin—Melissa.

「She suffered from a disease called ‘Excessive Mana Production Organ Failure Disease.’」

In this world, there are humans who possess mana and those who don’t. For the former, mana isn’t produced in just a small part of the body—it’s produced throughout the entire body, but organs in particular account for the majority of mana production.

However, the organs of those suffering from 「Excessive Mana Production Organ Failure Disease」 produce an excessive amount of mana beyond what would normally be created, putting a tremendous burden on the body. What’s worse, organs that allocate most of their resources to mana production stop performing their original functions, leading to fatal symptoms as the disease progresses.

「Do you need a detailed explanation of the disease?」

To Leito’s question, Mika briefly answers, 「Not necessary.」

「I don’t need one either. Just tell us what you want to say.」

Omi urges Leito, as if seeing through him.

「Melissa was a beautiful girl, rumored among the surrounding nobility to be a sheltered young lady of exceptional beauty… Her suffering and current state were caused by the reckless treatment of the Hero—no, that’s not right—of Ryūgūin.」

His speech was deliberately calm, but that in itself seemed to reveal his inner turmoil.

「The disease Melissa suffered from, ‘Excessive Mana Production Organ Failure Disease,’ occurs from the mutation of a single cell, which then transfers its abnormal properties to neighboring cells, gradually spreading the abnormality and worsening symptoms over time.」

The two silently nodded to his explanation.

「This disease has several characteristics. When healing magic is cast on the host, the abnormal cells multiply explosively. Therefore, when treating it, the priority is to not put so much strain on the patient that healing magic becomes necessary.」

Mika’s throat tightened with a bad premonition.

「Ryūgūin, without any knowledge of this, volunteered to treat Melissa. Her father, Annabel, tried desperately to refuse, but ultimately gave in to Ryūgūin’s severe threats and tearfully entrusted his daughter to him.」

The story was approaching its crucial point.

「Ryūgūin chose complete removal of the affected area as Melissa’s treatment method.」

And then, he continued.
Mika felt sweat running down her spine with a terrible foreboding.

「Everything he did was wrong. He removed the affected area completely without considering the possibility that it had metastasized to other organs, and then used extremely powerful healing magic to heal the lost parts.」

What would happen if he did such a thing—

「Yes. The outcome of such actions is clearer than daylight.」

Priest Leito said this and glanced at the girl in the coffin.

「What on earth was he?」

The color in his eyes—it was the same as Hilbert’s.

「If he had done even a little research, just a little, this tragedy could have been avoided… Why didn’t he approach life sincerely? Why did he begrudge even that much effort?」

The true nature of that color was not just anger and sadness, but an indelible weariness and resignation.

「In the first place, why did someone without medical knowledge volunteer for treatment? And didn’t he consider the possibility of failure at all?」

Both Mika and Omi know the answer.
The truth is both disappointingly and cruelly simple.
Ryūgūin volunteered to treat a disease he knew nothing about to satisfy his desire for self-promotion and recognition. As for the possibility of failure, he simply didn’t care if he failed.
Though they knew it, neither could put it into words.

「Her father, Annabel, still regrets entrusting her treatment to Ryūgūin to the point of wishing death. Her mother has spent every day since then in tears.
For Melissa’s parents, time has stopped.」

Mika wasn’t there when Ryūgūin performed the treatment. But even if she had been, would she have stopped him? The answer is no. On the contrary, she would have probably gone along with him and participated in his wrongdoing.

This fact tormented Mika.
However—

「If time has stopped, then we must start it moving again.」

It was Omi who spoke.

「Not just for this girl’s parents, but for the girl herself, and for you too.」

No, that’s not enough, she continued—

「If many people have lost their daily lives and stopped their time because of him (Ryūgūin), then Mika and I will set the stagnant time in motion once more.」

Omi smiled with a 「kufufu」 and asked, as if giving Mika a push,
「Right, Mika?」
Momentarily taken aback, Mika nevertheless responds:

「Yes!!」

She raised her voice in response so that it would reach Omi, Leito, and the girl sleeping in the coffin.
