「Leito. Gilbert’s reason for calling us to this place isn’t just about Melissa, is it?」
「Well…」
Priest Leito struggles to answer Omi’s question.
「Difficult to say, I see… That’s fine. You don’t need to tell me.」
She seems to switch gears immediately, saying 「Let’s go out」 as she walks toward the exit. The other two wonder where she’s going but silently follow her. They arrive at one of the rooms within the church, and she knocks on the door two or three times.
「Hilbert, I’m coming in.」
Omi calls to the person inside. Immediately, they hear 「Y-yes! I mean, no! Please wait a moment!」 along with the sound of a chair being hurriedly pushed back and footsteps rushing to the door.
「Lady Omi… please come in.」
Hilbert opens the door and invites the three inside.
「Um, about Cardinal Gilbert’s request—」
「Ah, I’ve confirmed the details.」
Omi answers Hilbert’s hesitant question concisely.
「So, what do you think?」
Hilbert’s timid question is vague. But its intent is clear.
「Melissa’s condition is severe, but… well, Mika and I should be able to manage it.」
Hilbert’s face brightens at these words.
「Then—」
「However, there are various preparations, so we can’t start right away. I’ll be leaving Lemone for about three days.」
「Three days… you say?」
For Mika, Omi’s words come as a complete surprise. Once, she wouldn’t have felt anything, but now the thought of spending time alone in Lemone, a place that feels like hostile territory, is terribly distressing. Perhaps her emotions show in her voice—
「Mika, I will definitely return. Besides, I believe you’ll be fine even without me.」
Omi places her hand on Mika’s shoulder.
「Just three days, but still three days. Three days can be both short and long. So Mika, don’t waste these three days until I return. Use the time to do what you can do.」
Then, to Hilbert, Omi says:
「You can contact Gilbert, can’t you?」
She asks with certainty.
「Of course, that’s possible.」
Hilbert nods.
「I’d like you to arrange a conversation between Gilbert and me as soon as possible. Hilbert, would you do that for me?」
「Such polite words for someone like me… I understand. I’ll connect you with Cardinal Gilbert right away.」
Hilbert’s manner is significantly different from his usual jovial self. His demeanor is that of a devout Crater Church follower.
He doesn’t know who Omi really is. Gilbert only told him she was 「a person of high standing.」 But that’s enough for him. Though Hilbert possesses no special abilities, through intuitive understanding, he strongly senses from Omi something akin to the untouchable tranquility he feels from Saint Mika.
「So, Mika, we part ways here for now. I’m going to speak with Gilbert now. As soon as that’s done, I’ll leave town. During that time, rely on Hilbert and Leito.」
Omi glances at Hilbert and Leito.
「Let’s go.」
She urges the three to attend to their respective duties.
◇◇◇
Priest Leito speaks to Mika with an expression like someone who’s just eaten something sour.
「She’s gone, isn’t she…」
From his expression and tone, it’s clear he can’t keep up with Omi’s pace. Omi is a powerful, storm-like person.
「Yes…」
Mika responds thoughtfully to his words. Even for Mika, who has spent considerable time with her, understanding everything about Omi is impossible. It must be even more so for Leito, who just met her.
「So—what will you do now, Saint Mika? Will you return to the inn that Hilbert prepared?」
「No, please continue showing me around the convent.」
「Huh?—I mean, why is that?」
「Before I answer, there’s something I’d like to ask.」
「Yes, please ask anything.」
「Is there room in the convent for two new sisters to stay?」
「Two people would be fine… Wait, you don’t mean—」
Priest Leito seems to realize something from Mika’s words.
「We came to this town with a mission. So, though I’m sorry to Hilbert who kindly prepared such a wonderful inn for us, we would like to stay at this town’s convent and live just like the other sisters.」
Mika bows her head.
「I know it’s selfish. But would you please listen to my selfishness?」
Priest Leito’s answer is predetermined. There’s no way he could refuse when asked like that. But as she keeps her head bowed, Priest Leito feels more flustered than he’s ever felt before, and while sweating profusely, he desperately urges Mika to raise her head.
