Chapter 14

The beginning of a dream is sudden. What triggers it won’t be clear until later.
I’m desperately living, fighting, watching the group gradually grow larger and the number of comrades increase.
I think it’s for their sake that I struggle to make the dream come true.

It’s been almost a year since Shuri joined the group.
Before I knew it, my mercenary group had grown into a large organization of over a thousand people.
I’ve made my childhood friends unit captains, with vice-captains to assist them.
Fortunately, I have the ability to maintain a large unit, and so far, we’re managing somehow.
The biggest factor is probably Shuri’s cooking.
Those who join our group invariably complain about the pay. They grumble that it’s too low or whatnot.
But when they realize how delicious the food we provide is, they stop complaining. They realize they can save money that would have been spent drinking in town.
I think, well, if one expense is reduced, of course money will accumulate. Even I find myself saving money that I used to spend on drinking. I don’t know what to do with it.
When I mention this to Shuri, he says,

“Then why don’t you send a ring to Arius as a token of engagement?”
“A ring?”
“Yes. Where I come from, rings are used as a token of engagement or to propose.
They say wearing it on the left ring finger means marriage, and on the right ring finger means you have someone you’ve promised a future with.”

This is truly an eye-opening suggestion.
I decide to prepare an extraordinary ring to surprise her.

And now, this war.
It’s a conflict between Nouviche, which has the Nouviche forest area rich in food and medicinal resources, and Yuyuvi, which has the Yuyuvi mines rich in mineral resources.
I’ve explained it roughly to Shuri, but this war is teeming with political machinations.
Originally, there was talk of an alliance between Yuyuvi and Nouviche through a royal engagement.
However, mineral resources will eventually be depleted. Forest resources, on the other hand, can be collected again given time.
The alliance offered little benefit to Nouviche, and they anticipated excessive exploitation of forest resources by Yuyuvi, so Nouviche refused.
And when Yuyuvi, angered by what they saw as a unilateral breaking of the royal engagement, declared war, this conflict began.
If the engagement had succeeded, they could have openly plundered resources. When refused, they could conquer and plunder the territory under the pretext of a just cause.
Of course, Yuyuvi never thought they would lose to Nouviche. In territories with mineral resources, the quantity and quality of weapons are high. In a normal battle, they would have had a 70% chance of winning.
That is, if Yuyuvi hadn’t looked down on us during negotiations.
At first, Yuyuvi approached us to hire mercenaries. Recently, our mercenary group has been undefeated. We’ve become known as the mercenary group most dreaded to encounter on the battlefield.
But Yuyuvi told us to work for a pittance.
They said they’d guarantee mineral resources and weapons if we won.
They’re underestimating us. Our group already has no problems with weapons. We have procurement routes for mineral resources and connections with merchants, so we don’t need weapons.
Besides, anything Lill makes is far superior to their inferior products.

“How are Yuyuvi’s weapons, Lill?”
“They’re made with decent metalworking techniques. But Lill can replicate this level.”
“Really?”
“In fact, now that Lill has seen these, she can apply what she’s learned and make even better ones.
In exchange for a hamburger steak, of course.”

It’s always hamburger steak, whether it’s for making a large stove or a big pot.
I’ve just been warned by Shuri that we’re consuming too much beef.

“You need to move on from hamburger steak. You’re troubling Shuri too.”
“She won’t compromise on something so delicious. That’s Lill’s justice!!!”

Faced with Lill’s intense spirit and demon-like expression, I had no choice but to give up.

Anyway, I have no intention of cooperating with those who look down on us.
Since there’s no benefit in siding with Yuyuvi, I decided to side with Nouviche.
The Nouviche royalty, facing the high probability of defeat, welcomed us gladly. Well, the more allies, the better.
And Nouviche is rich in food resources, with many merchants dealing in food. I intend to use this opportunity to secure distribution channels.

The war ended in victory.
The enemy relied on their weapons and underestimated us as weak, so when we exploited that, they quickly retreated.
Well, apparently Yuyuvi was secretly trying to poach Kuuga from us, so it serves them right.
If we let Kuuga rampage on the front lines, the enemy becomes dominated by fear and flees in disorder. Serves them right.
If we win, we can receive additional rewards.
So far, everything was going according to plan.
The other two mercenary groups had worked decently too, so they were expecting additional rewards.
But something unexpected happened.

In the audience chamber.
In the audience chamber with its unique architectural style that creates an atmosphere reminiscent of a cool forest, Shuri and I sat waiting.
By the way, the reason I brought Shuri along is just a hunch.
I just had a feeling that bringing him along would make things go smoother.

“We thank you for your efforts. You have won the war splendidly and protected our sacred forest. We shall pay you additional rewards.”

Good, just as expected.
I want to get it quickly and go negotiate with the merchants.

“However, we will only pay one mercenary group.”

…What?

“I want to set a condition. Even the reward we’ve already paid you has stretched our territory’s finances to the limit. So, I want to pay only those who meet the condition.”

The other mercenary groups look like they want to complain, but I quickly grasped the situation.
Yes, this country’s finances are on the brink. From the moment it was decided that war would break out, everyone from the commoners to the royal family had been practicing strict frugality. They all united to survive.
As a result, they managed to hire three mercenary groups.
But they didn’t have the ability to pay additional rewards.
I had understood the situation, so I had accepted a lower rate.
However, the other stupid mercenary groups tried to squeeze them, taking advantage of their position.
Long-term stability – that’s the basics of business and mercenary work.
But this royal family is relatively conscientious and smart.
They could have settled it with gifts and rewards from the beginning, but they’re trying to pay an appropriate additional reward.
I appreciate that about them.

“My daughter is a gourmet. However, she’s no longer satisfied with ordinary meals these days.
So, I’ll pay additional rewards to the group that can make a satisfactory dish for her.”

We’ve won!
I internally pumped my fist.
Other groups might struggle, but we have Shuri.
This could be an opportunity to establish connections with the royal family and gain their backing.
Hehehe, I’m going to get all sorts of things out of this.
That daughter, the princess, was a young girl.
She’s a beautiful girl with blonde hair tied back. She’s dressed in clothing unique to this territory.
She has somewhat spirited eyes.
I don’t quite understand, but she’s fidgeting her feet. Restless leg syndrome?

“What I want to eat is a delicious dish that’s sweet, sour, spicy, and bitter.
Bring it to me.”

What… the hell?
I don’t understand. There’s no way something like that could be delicious!
The guys from the other groups are confused too. Of course they are.
There’s no way a monstrosity that satisfies all taste sensations could be delicious!
But Shuri wasn’t fazed at all.

We moved to the kitchen and were about to start cooking.
Everyone from the other groups has a tragic expression. Like they’re going into a losing battle.

“Shuri, are you okay with this?”

Even I can’t help but worry about Shuri with this difficult task.
I can’t even imagine something that satisfies all taste sensations and is still delicious.

“Well, I have an idea, or rather, a guess.”

…You’re kidding, right?

“Really?!”
“Well, it’s a bit of a special dish, but…”

Special, you say?
Do you need my help with this?

“Is there anything I can help with?”
“Could you please tell Arius that tomorrow’s yudofu is postponed?”
“That might be… a bit difficult.”

Recently, Arius has been obsessed with yudofu.
She’s overjoyed, saying it’s delicious, doesn’t make you fat, is good for health, and even improves skin firmness.
I feel like the skin of the female subordinates has become smoother too.

“Please try. This dish stars tofu, so we can’t start without it.”

Tofu? This dish uses tofu?

“Alright, I’ll get started then.”

He took out green onions and minced meat, tofu and pepper, garlic and ginger, and lots of mixed seasonings including sugar and sake, along with a mysterious white liquid and a dark red unknown seasoning.
That seasoning looks spicy just by looking at it. Come to think of it, Shuri had a period where he was managing various ingredients in jars. Is this from that?
Shuri brought out a pot and a stove, and started cooking the green onions, minced meat, tofu, and green onions.
He’s just shaking the pot or stirring with a ladle he took out, so it’s a bit different from grilling.
When I asked before, he said it’s a technique called stir-frying.
He seasoned it, added the mysterious white liquid and the dark red unknown seasoning, and the pepper, cooked it further, and it seems to be complete.
What came out was a mysterious dish with red liquid.

“This looks spicy…”
“It’s spicy for those who aren’t used to it. But once you get addicted, you’ll be moved by the many flavors.”

Seriously?
It doesn’t look like that at all, but since Shuri is so confident, I decided to believe him.

When we returned to the audience chamber, the other mercenary groups had already brought their dishes.
Looking at the princess’s face, she’s furious.

“Disgusting!”

She looks like she’s about to throw the plate.
Even from a distance, it looks like a monstrosity. No wonder it tastes bad.

“Princess. Our cook, Shuri, has prepared a dish. Please try it.”
“You’re the last one…”

The previous dishes must have been really bad. The princess’s anger is considerable. However, she’s exhausted from continuously eating bad food.
But Shuri, undeterred by such anger, served the mysterious dish without hesitation.
The princess’s face changed to a puzzled expression.

“What is this?”
“It’s mapo tofu.”

I see, so that’s what it’s called.
Come to think of it, I hadn’t asked its name.

“Ma… what?”
“Please try it. It’s delicious.”

That sounds like a lie. It only looks spicy.
We might lose our heads if we’re not careful. Isn’t he afraid?
The princess, looking apprehensive, scooped it up with a spoon and put it in her mouth.
She paused for a moment, and then her face looked like she was about to cry.

“It’s, it’s spicy, spicy!”

So it is spicy after all!
This is bad, the surrounding Imperial Guards look like they’re about to draw their swords.
If I had known this would happen, I should have brought Kuuga.
I can’t stop sweating.

“Princess, please savor it well.”

While writhing from the spiciness, she tried to endure it with her eyes closed.
Then, her face changed to surprise.

“…It’s sweet?”

What?! Sweet?!

“That’s the sweetness of the tofu.”

Tofu, I see. Indeed, it has the sweetness of the soy beans it’s made from.

“And it’s sour too.”
“That’s one of the flavors of the doubanjiang.”
“There’s also… bitterness.”
“That’s because it’s been cooked thoroughly in the pot.”
“And finally, it’s spicy.”
“That’s from the pepper and doubanjiang.”

Amazing, he calculated all of this!
Adding flavor at every step and with every ingredient, harmonizing them, and completing the dish.
It’s an incredible technique. I didn’t know he was capable of such things!
The princess has gotten used to the spiciness and is now eagerly eating.
It must be so delicious that she’s absorbed in it!

“It’s delicious! It’s delicious!”
“Please wipe your sweat as you eat.
It should be just right for a princess who seems to be feeling a bit cold.”

…Feeling a bit cold?

“What do you mean?”
“I noticed you’ve been moving your toes as if you’re cold since we came here.”

So that fidgeting was because she was cold!
At this time of day, it’s warm inside this building.
But it must be tough for women.
Come to think of it, I remember Arius lamenting about how her hands and feet get cold.
Apparently, it’s something specific to women, and it can be quite painful at night or in places without sunlight.
He noticed that just by looking at her a little!
The princess was surprised too, but she smiled.
Her body warmed up, and she got to eat something delicious.
With this, we’ve secured the additional reward!

“I like you! Become my cook!”
“Ah, that’s impossible.”

Just as I was rejoicing, something unbelievable happened, and then something even more unbelievable on top of that.
In an instant, this place turned into a battlefield.

In the end, we managed to prevent Shuri from being poached.
We received the additional reward, and acquired routes for food sales. We also got them to be flexible with us.
However, we can’t let our guard down.
That princess’s obsession with Shuri is strong. We don’t know when she might resort to poaching attempts or forceful measures like kidnapping or abduction.
We’ll have to assign guards from Kuuga and Tegue’s units.
Ah, my head hurts.

“Gungrave, this is causing you trouble, isn’t it?”
“Huh? It can’t be helped. Your cooking is just that attractive.”
“Is that so. Oh, I left seasonings and recipes so the princess can eat it anytime.”
“What did you say?”
“Well, if they know how to make it, it seems they can do it even without a stove. I gave them various application recipes and cleared out this time.”

I see, indeed if the princess is satisfied, the possibility of her taking rash actions is lower.
But we can’t let our guard down.
You never know when royalty might go off the rails. We need to be cautious.

However, even after several days, nothing like that happened.
Instead, a thank-you letter and a kitchen knife with the royal family’s seal were sent.
They’re trying to get their foot in the door, aren’t they?
Shuri is happily using the knife, though.
I wonder if he understands what it means.
Well, knowing him, I’ve got a feeling he’ll figure something out.

By the way, Arius was angry with me.
Apparently, the postponement of the yudofu was quite unforgivable.
