Chapter 3

Hey there, I’m Shuri. Nice to meet you.
On my way back from shopping, I was enveloped in light, and before I knew it, I found myself in a foreign land working as a cook for a mercenary group. You never know what life has in store for you, right?
Since then, the Leader, Gungrave, has filled me in on the current state of affairs.
Turns out, this is another world. I’ve never heard of the Çabrille continent before.
The existence of magic further confirms that this isn’t Earth. Normally, you’d expect me to have a talent for magic and be overpowered, right? But that’s not the case at all. I cried a little about that.
Anyway, it’s been a week since I arrived here. It seems we’ve won the recent battle. Apparently, there were no casualties in our group.
Gungrave says things like,

“It’s all thanks to your cooking. That’s what gave us strength.”

But in the end, it’s really about the courage and determination of those fighting on the front lines, isn’t it?

Now, about the rewards from this battle – of course, there’s money, but I asked for seasonings and ingredients.
Salt alone is pretty tough, you know. I managed to get my hands on some spices, vinegar, and fish sauce. The lord tried to argue, but that’s none of my business. Food situations are tough everywhere, so we can’t afford to be picky.
My cooking repertoire has expanded, and Gungrave is grateful, but honestly, it’s just because I got tired of stew and soup. Eating the same dish repeatedly takes a mental toll.
A problem has also come up, and I’m thinking of ways to solve it.

It’s about the stove.

In other words, heat control. We can only boil things, so it’s stew all the time.
When I heard about how they cook fish, I was speechless. Apparently, they’ve been eating it charred, and I’m worried about when they’ll develop cancer.
Was that a superstition? I think there were various theories about needing to eat a whole drum barrel’s worth or something. It’s true that it doesn’t happen often, and it might be a lie, but it’s certainly not good for your health.
When I told them about this, Gungrave was speechless. The other captains were shocked too.

After discussing it with Gungrave, he introduced me to one of the captains.
It’s Lill, the Captain of the Magic Engineering Unit.

“So, Lill, I need your cooperation.”
“Mm.”

We decided to discuss this in the Magic Engineering Unit’s tent.
The Magic Engineering Unit primarily focuses on creating tools using magic, imbuing magic into tools, and doing what you might call magical crafting. You know, those so-called magical items. They also use magic for construction work. Apparently, she excels at setting up camps.

“Tell Lill your requirements in detail.”

Lill doesn’t talk much.
She’s short, a cute loli-type girl. She wears a simple outfit – a white coat over a blue tunic and pants. She has blue hair tied back and a sleepy-eyed look.
If she came to my world, she’d be super popular, with big brothers doting on her left and right.

“First, it’s something like this.”

I explain, showing her a simple drawing. It’s a portable stove.

“I want to be able to adjust the heat like this, and place a pot on top of this metal frame to apply heat.”
“?”
“So, I want to be able to control the heat output here.”
“That explains it, she thinks.”

I notice some cluttered tools to the side.

“What are these?”
“Ignition materials. Paper that burns when infused with mana.”
“Please use these as a base.”
“?”

In other words, paper will do. Apparently, she can also make water-resistant paper, so let’s have her apply and combine these concepts.
I write down my requirements on paper.
First, something that can be rolled up but easily flattened out again. Two large circles to levitate the pot with magic and produce flames. Then a small circle to adjust the heat. Also, add a feature where it automatically extinguishes after a certain time. I’m worried about fires.
When I explain this, Lill looks surprised but seems motivated.

It’s done in no time.
It’s a magic circle-type portable stove. Just as I requested.

“That’s amazing, Lill!”
“Of course.”

She says, puffing out her chest proudly. I find it a bit cute.

“Well then, let’s have you taste a new dish first.”
“Oh!”

Time to cook right away.
This time, it’s hamburger steak. For the sauce, let’s go for a light flavor using fish sauce and a daikon-like vegetable. Since fish sauce smells fishy on its own, I soaked some green onions in it to reduce the odor. It doesn’t completely eliminate it, but it should make it better. Nuoc mam is tough to work with!
We also have beef, so I mix it with flour to shape it, and it’s done.

“Here you go!”
“Mm!”

Lill seems happy, which I find a bit cute.
She cuts the hamburger steak with a fork and brings it to her mouth.
I find that action a bit cute too.

“Mmm! Mm, mm!”

I’m glad she seems to like it.
A smile appears on Lill’s usually expressionless face. She keeps bringing the hamburger steak to her mouth, and before I know it, she’s finished eating.
I’m also happy to have gotten a handy, portable, high-performance stove.

After this, they went into battle again, and apparently, Lill’s tools played a big role in their victory.
As expected, Lill is incredible!
