Chapter 4

Lill is a genius, though her name isn’t well-known yet.
Five years ago, she joined a mercenary group at the invitation of her childhood friend, Gungrave. Lill is an orphan, and she decided to go with the others who were also orphans and had lived in the slums.
Lill has a talent for magic engineering. She’s proud of it herself. During her time in the slums, she made various things to help her companions, and even now in the mercenary group, she works behind the scenes.
But Lill doesn’t have the magical talent she wished for.
Magic and magic engineering are different.
Both magic and magic engineering use what’s called mana that floats in the air. The difference is whether it can be used on people or only on objects.
Magic engineering can interfere with the shape of materials to change their form, or inscribe magic letters (Magi-Spell) to imbue objects with magical power.
In other words, it can manipulate the shape of objects and imbue them with power.
However, it can only be done through direct contact, and unlike magicians, there’s no combat ability. They can only work as engineering troops.
Her childhood friends are kind, and no one in her group looks down on the Magic Engineering Unit.
But during joint operations, they sometimes get belittled by other units.
Lill could only grit her teeth and endure it along with her subordinates.
It’s at times like these that an unusual person joined their group.
A person named Shuri. He has an unusual appearance and an unusual aura.
At first, Lill was wary. But the food is delicious, and he’s a kind person.
She thought, “He’s not a bad person after all.”

After winning a battle, Lill and Gungrave were listening to Shuri talk with the other captains.
Shuri insisted on getting not just money, but also food and seasonings as part of the victory reward.
Until now, they had only received money, but Shuri was desperate.
Seeing this, Gungrave agreed and successfully negotiated with the reluctant lord to get what they wanted.
When everyone asked why, Gungrave said:

“We’ve only been asking for money until now. But watching Shuri, I realized something.
Just getting money doesn’t fill our stomachs. Food expenses are no joke. So if we get food and seasonings separately from the money, we can reduce our necessary expenses by that much. It’ll help us get by until we’re hired for another battle.
Well, knowing him, he probably had some thoughts after seeing how we manage our food.”

He seemed to trust Shuri.

When asked about food-related matters before, Lill had said it was always salty soup and burnt fish.
Shuri was surprised and talked desperately.
First, eating only salty soup can harm your health, apparently. It can make you sick and throw off your condition.
And burnt fish, this was said to be the worst. Somehow, eating only burnt things could lead to incurable serious illnesses and death.
Everyone was speechless. Lill and the others could have died.
From then on, they left food-related matters to Shuri. They were able to eat soups with various flavors and ingredients. It’s delicious, and their physical condition improved. At first, they thought the taste was too bland, but as they got used to it, they could taste the ingredients well. Sweet, bitter, spicy, sour. They could feel all of it. All of it felt good.
Thinking back, the salty soup was probably too strong. Lill and the others’ tongues were on the verge of breaking.
What Shuri said was true.
Gungrave was convinced too.

“Food becomes human power. I finally realized that money alone can’t make us move…”

Lill thinks so too.
She got money and made various things, but…
It didn’t fill her stomach.

It was on such a day that Shuri came to Lill for help.
A day that would decide Lill’s fate.

“So, Lill, I need your cooperation.”
“Mm.”

That day, Shuri came to Lill’s tent.
He looks around curiously, which is unusual.
Apparently, on Gungrave’s recommendation, he wants Lill to make something for him.
A pot maybe? A knife?

“So, tell Lill your requirements in detail.”

Whatever it is, let’s pin down exactly what he want.
A sharp knife, or a ladle that doesn’t rust, perhaps.
If she wants to make it, it’s easy.

“First, it’s something like this.”

But Shuri’s request was beyond Lill’s imagination.
When given paper and charcoal, he draws a square box with a shape Lill has never seen before.
What does this have to do with cooking?

“I want to be able to adjust the heat like this, and place a pot on top of this metal frame to apply heat.”
“?”

Lill didn’t quite understand at first, but soon realized.
She gets it now. It’s about the fire source.
Indeed, if there were a tool that could easily start a fire, cooking would be simpler.

“So, I want to be able to control the heat output here.”
“That explains it, she thinks.”

Heat adjustment? What does heat have to do with cooking?
Isn’t it better to make soup with a strong fire and eat it piping hot?

“What are these?”

Shuri asks, pointing at the ignition material.
It’s Lill’s masterpiece, which ignites immediately when imbued with mana.
This makes starting fires easy. It’s also useful in battle.
The drawback is that only magicians and magic engineering troops can use it.

“Ignition materials. Paper that burns when infused with mana.”
“Please use these as a base.”
“?”

Use these?
When asked, Shuri says something surprising.
First, make it with paper. When a pot is placed on the circular magic letter (Magi-Spell), he wants it to float.
Float? The technology for floating objects exists, but it can only produce enough output to float a large rock at best. It’s not thought to be very useful, so few people use it.
Then, he wants to produce fire under it.
Lill is stunned. Float it and set it on fire. Add two effects to the magic letter (Magi-Spell) and draw it.
She had never thought of that. After floating, add another effect. I see, just floating isn’t enough. You need to be able to move it and such. Otherwise, it’s just floating and not useful.
Then, he wants to adjust the heat with a small circular magic letter (Magi-Spell).
There’s no need to directly imbue mana like magicians or magic engineering troops. If you add a function that reacts when touched, a function that takes in mana accordingly, and a function to adjust it, even people who can’t use mana can use magical tools just by touching them.
Also, he wants it to extinguish if there’s no operation for a certain period of time. About an hour for the time.
Furthermore, he wants the paper to be water-resistant, to quickly flatten out even if rolled up, and more ideas keep popping up.
Shuri is amazing.
Lill thought she was a genius, but she was way off.
Shuri is a genius. Lill doesn’t even come close.
After receiving the request, Lill immediately starts making it.
When magic engineering troops write magic letters (Magi-Spell), they imbue mana with a special brush and engrave special characters to exert power.
But adding two effects, interlocking operation, and adjustment functions is a first.
Still, Lill tries not to stop her hands, trusting her knowledge and imagination.
That’s right, there’s no need to write the magic letter (Magi-Spell) in just one character.
Usually, magic letters (Magi-Spell) used in magical tools are written in one character and that’s it.
But this time is different. Complex circuits and functions need to be added.
Not just one character, but stringing together magic letters (Magi-Spell) corresponding to everything, and further stabilizing it while adding functions to transmit mana and adjust the amount…
As a result, magic letters (Magi-Spell) are densely written in a circular shape. All of them, including the pot stand and four adjustment dials.

“That’s amazing, Lill!”
“Of course.”

Shuri is surprised and praises her.
Lill is also satisfied with creating such a masterpiece. She puffs up with pride.

“Well then, let’s have you taste a new dish first.”
“Oh!”

A new dish? She’s looking forward to it.
What Shuri takes out is beef, flour, fish sauce, green onions, and radish.
Ugh, Lill thinks.
Lill doesn’t like meat dishes. Fish is fine, but she can’t stand the smell of meat.
It’s like, raw smell or something…

But Shuri suddenly starts chopping the beef into tiny pieces.
Honestly, it’s grotesque and scary.
In no time, the beef is minced so finely it barely resembles its original form. You can barely tell it’s meat.
Then he gathers it in one place and throw in chopped green onions with fish sauce. Green onions in fish sauce?
The radish is also finely chopped and then minced. It’s all mushy.
Lill wants to run away. She doesn’t want to eat such a grotesque dish.
Then, after gathering the radish in one place, he turns to the meat.
He mixes in a little flour and shape it into a round form in his hands.
It’s interesting to see the meat making strange movements in his hands, gradually becoming round.
Then, he put the meat in the pot. He sprinkles salt and spices and start grilling it.
Somehow, it smells good. There’s no usual gamey smell or raw smell.
When he turns it over, it has a nice color.
At that moment, Lill notices. The fire from the magic circle-shaped ignition source is weak.
I see, instead of grilling it quickly with strong fire, he’s grilling it slowly with medium heat.
That’s why it’s grilling so deliciously.
He plates the grilled round meat and top it with the minced radish, fish sauce, and green onions.
It was more like a sauce than a soup.

“Here you go!”
“Mm!”

But the smell is incredibly good.
The mixture of spices and meat smell is almost violent. It’s tempting her, saying “Eat me.”
Without the usual aversion, she cuts off a corner with a fork, mixes it with radish and sauce, and brings it to her mouth.

This is truth.

The fat of the meat is sweet, and the texture is soft, melting in her mouth.
As it melts, more fat overflows, and it’s sweet.
The salt adjusts that sweetness, and the spices add deliciousness.
The richness, sweetness, spiciness, aroma, and smell of the meat itself. All of these are pleasant.
The amazing thing is the sauce.
If it were just that, it would be too rich with just fat, but Lill’s mouth feels refreshed.
The sauce, without the usual fishy smell, has a refreshing sourness, the crunchy texture of radish, overflowing water, and a refreshing spiciness that perfectly eliminates the richness of the fat.
This is incredibly delicious.

“Mmm! Mm, mm!”

Lill can’t help but make sounds due to how delicious it is.
Seeing this, Shuri smiles happily.
Somehow, Lill is able to eat something delicious, and Shuri looks happy too.
She feels happiness.

Lill is inexperienced. There was no way her name could have become well-known.
After eating the dish called hamburger steak, Lill asks Shuri.
How do you know so many things, she asks.

“Well, I suppose it’s because of the efforts of those who came before us.
Of course, I put in effort too. Tried this and that, failed, and then succeeded.
It’s called ingenuity, you know. I’m not very clever, so it was hard work.”

Shuri says with a wry smile.
I see, what Lill lacks is ingenuity.
It’s not enough to just be able to “make” things. She needs to learn how to “create.”

After that, Lill looks back at Shuri’s words and requests, and makes a new invention.

“So, you want me to take a look.”

Lill tries to show it to Gungrave secretly.

First, a handheld catapult.

A catapult is a huge device that shoots rocks far away to destroy castle walls or attack defensive troops en masse. It’s a siege weapon.
She made it handy.

It’s simple to use.

Place a rock on the paper.
Then, touch the activation mark.
Then, the rock flies in a parabolic arc.
Unlike a catapult, it’s not huge, but made of paper small enough for one infantry soldier to carry on their back and run.
Catapults have two forms, one for moving and one for attacking, and they have the drawback of needing to be reassembled each time.
But this can be spread out, placed, touched, and used. Its convenience is incomparable.

The other is the flame stone.

It looks like a stone, but when you say the activation language (keyword), touch the activation mark, and throw it, it explodes after three seconds.
An explosive flame occurs, engulfing objects within a one-meter radius.
The drawback is that if you’re not careful, you might catch yourself or your allies in it.
She adds that it requires training.

The last one is the timed ignition stone.

It’s a stone that produces flame at a specified time when you touch it, say the activation language (keyword) and the time.
It can be activated up to two hours in advance.
The drawback is that it’s not very powerful. It’s just a stone that burns well.

But Gungrave is surprised and happy.

“With this, we don’t need expensive catapults!
The flame stone will also be a powerful weapon for the infantry, and the timed ignition stone is perfect for covert operations!
As expected of you, Lill!”

But she feels a bit guilty.
All these ideas are Shuri’s.
But she won’t lose.
Ingenuity. Lill will continue to invent from now on.

Lill Blanche is known as one of the great figures and heroes, to the extent that there’s no one who doesn’t know her name.
The weapons she invented turned the tide of many battles, sometimes with enough power to decide the outcome of the war.
Famous is the siege of Yannegan.
At this time, the three weapons she invented caused the fall of Yannegan’s castle, which was considered impregnable, in just three days.
Catapults were mass-produced to rain down rocks like rain,
Flame stones showed their ferocious power in close combat,
And timed ignition stones allowed for night raids.
For the opponents, it must have been nothing short of a nightmare.
Inventions continued after this battle, and some historians and archaeologists believe that her existence ended the war ten years earlier.

However, after the establishment of the Unified Empire, she declined the appointment as a Honorary National Magic Engineering Engineer.
The ministers who didn’t know her were perplexed, but her old comrades who knew her understood and saw her off.
After declining the position of Honorary National Magic Engineering Engineer, she established a private magic engineering cram school. This has become the Blanche Magic Engineering Academy in modern times, with the largest facilities and environment on the continent.
She worked towards improving the status and technical standards of magic engineering engineers. She made people understand the importance of magic engineering troops and engineers, who had been looked down upon as mere craftsmen until then.
However, in this academy, the methods of making weapons are separated into specialized fields, and most departments focus on the production, research, and study of magical tools that enrich and make daily life convenient, closely related to everyday life.
The theory she established – the magic text (Magi-Program) that exerts multiple effects by interlocking magic letters (Magi-Spell) that were previously used with only one character, the activation language (keyword) that activates by words, and the contact activation (Magi-Switch) that activates by touch – will be used for peaceful purposes.
The words that are always conveyed as the spirit of the academy:
“Ingenuity” will continue to be passed down.

As a side note, it’s recorded that Lill Blanche was an unparalleled lover of hamburger steak.
It was probably because it was the food that became her turning point.
It was the meal where she learned ingenuity.
The sight of her happily eating hamburger steak apparently made everyone feel warm and fuzzy.
