Chapter 58

It’s me, Shuri here.
I’m just an ordinary guy from modern-day Japan who got caught up in something mysterious and was transported to another world.
Currently, I…

“Lill. Please raise your head.”

I’m making Lill do a dogeza (formal bow of apology) while lecturing her.
Let me explain why, simply.
She was secretly stealing bites of the hamburger steak I was making for dinner. That’s it!
I got angry about this, so I’m properly scolding her. This can’t keep happening.

“She is sorry.”
“It’s good that you’re reflecting on your actions. But how many times has this been now?”
“About… 4 times?”
“You’re way off. It’s been over 40 times.”

Trying to downplay it to one-tenth, what a piece of work.

“If this doesn’t stop, I’ll have to stop making hamburger steaks for you, Lill.”
“That would be terrible!!!!”

Lill says this with a desperate look on her face.
If it’s that bad, then why do you keep stealing bites?

“It would be terrible, right? Then please stop sneaking into the kitchen and eating the hamburger steaks.”
“L-Lill understands… She’ll reflect on her actions, so next time please make hamburger steak with demi-glace sauce.”
“You’re not reflecting at all, are you?”

I can’t help but furrow my brow. It’s just troublesome when someone shows absolutely no reflection or regret.

“I’ll be reporting this incident to Gungrave. Is that okay?”
“T-that would be bad.”
“No excuses. Please reflect on your actions. Look around you.”

When I prompt Lill to do so, she starts observing her surroundings.
This is the kitchen, and on the table, there are several plates where hamburger steaks were supposed to be plated for serving.
However, they’re all empty. This isn’t just stealing bites anymore—it’s straight-up robbery.
Because of this, everyone else is showing angry expressions too. “She’s just making more work for us!” that kind of look.
Perhaps unable to handle those stares, Lill makes herself smaller and says

“She’s sorry…”
“…Well, make sure this absolutely doesn’t happen again. How many months do you think it’s been since we established our base in this territory? It’s been three months. Three months. Please get it together already.”
“Okay…”

Thinking she’s finally showing genuine remorse this time, I let out a sigh and look toward my subordinate.

“So, considering this won’t happen again, we’ll end this matter with a report to Gungrave. For dinner, please change the menu to… tofu hamburger steak. We should be running low on beef stock anyway.”
“Understood.”

At my words, Garn scratches his head with an exasperated look.
Then, I help Lill stand up by taking her hand and ask her again

“So? What was your reason for coming here?”
“Oh, right”

Lill says while dusting off the hem of her clothes:

“Gungrave is calling for you. That’s why Lill came.”
“You’re lying.”
“Gungrave part is true!”
“Then why did you eat all the hamburger steaks…?”

I cover my face with my hand, wearing a tired expression.
Really, Lill’s love for hamburger steak is such a problem. When will she ever fix this bad habit…?
Well, there’s no use worrying about that now.

“Alright, understood. I’ll head there now.”
“Then Lill will go back to her room—”
“Everyone! Lill says she can at least help with washing dishes, so please work her hard!”
“Eh! Wait—!”
“Well then, I’m off!”

I quickly slip out of the kitchen and head toward Gungrave’s room.
Leave the dining hall, enter the hallway, climb the stairs. Outside, it’s completely dark now. The moon is out.
Usually, dinner preparations would have been done by now…
However, walking through the castle like this, I can see how the system has been changing.
There are familiar faces and newly hired people.
The form of governance is changing, and the military structure is about to change too.
Just three months. Three months have passed since that day.
Sounité changed its name and made a fresh start.

“I’m coming in~ Gungrave!”

Having reached the room, I knock on the lord’s door.
…But there’s no response. Strange? He’s usually in this room…
Come to think of it, I forgot to ask Lill where he wanted me to wait. That’s no good, it’s a mistake.
Well, I might as well try one more time.

“ Gungrave? Are you there~?”

Even after knocking and calling out several more times, there’s no answer. Hmm, why?
I guess he’s not here? Can’t be helped, it’s troublesome but I should go back and ask Lill.
Just as I turn my feet toward the kitchen,

“I’m here~ Come in~”

A voice comes from inside.
? Why now…? I wonder why he didn’t respond right away.
Though it’s curious, I decide not to worry about it.

“I’m coming in.”

I quietly open the door and enter.
When I close the door and turn around, what I see is the lord’s desk and tall piles of documents…
Gungrave’s figure isn’t visible?

“I know what you want to say! I’m here! I’m coming over there now!”

Just as I hear a voice from behind the documents, Gungrave emerges from there.
Over these three months, Gungrave seems to have gotten quite used to paperwork, as he appears less fatigued. However.

“ Gungrave, isn’t it about time you shaved your beard?”
“What? Doesn’t it suit me?”
“Not at all.”

Gungrave is trying to act lordly by growing out his beard.
Honestly, it really doesn’t suit him. Even if he keeps growing it…

“That’s what I’ve been saying, Gungrave.”

Also emerging from behind the documents and standing next to Gungrave is Arius.
She’s wearing loose-fitting clothes now.

“A beard doesn’t suit you. It would be better if you shaved and kept a clean appearance.”
“Really…? I thought it would make me look more like a lord though.”
“You don’t need to try unnecessarily to dress the part. Don’t rely needlessly on a beard, show that you’re a lord through your work.”
“That’s right.”

I say with a smile.

“You’re going to be a father soon. It would be good to show your child the image of a handsome, clean-shaven father. Don’t make Arius worry unnecessarily.”

At those words, Gungrave laughs sheepishly.
And Arius smiles happily while stroking her lower abdomen.
Arius is pregnant.
This was discovered a month ago when she started experiencing morning sickness-like symptoms and changes in eating habits. When she went to see a doctor, it was confirmed she was expecting.
You should have seen how happy Gungrave was then… He was shouting and jumping around so much he nearly broke through the ceiling, it was quite a task to calm him down.

“So, what did you need me for?”
“Ah, about that.”

Gungrave skillfully pulls out one sheet from the mountain of documents on the lord’s desk and hands it to me.
Taking it and checking its contents, I say without taking my eyes off the document

“A business trip?”

What’s written is a request to go around the territory’s villages and conduct an investigation.
What kind of investigation? It only says to check the condition of the territory’s people and crops.
It’s hard to imagine without specific details. And it doesn’t seem like something they’d need to ask me to do?

“Why me? For an investigation, Tegue would be more suitable.”
“The investigation is just a pretext. Actually, I want you to do what you mentioned before.”

At those words, it clicks for me.

“Cooking classes and improving relations?”
“Exactly.”

Arius continues from there

“Currently, in this territory, we’ve learned through investigation that there are many residents who harbor opposition… or rather, negative feelings. So, we’d like you to go around to each area and work on improving those relations.”
“Arius, you’re really giving off the lord’s wife vibe now.”
“Eh? R-really?”

She was so composed that I couldn’t help but comment.
Arius’s dignified expression melts into a happy, embarrassed smile.

“Well… that’s the situation. Feed them good food, discover new ingredients, resolve the residents’ concerns… basically, use whatever means necessary. Can you do it?”
“Of course!”

I beat my chest as I answer.

“I’m the cook of the Gungrave Mercenary Group. If it’s an order, I’ll just deliver delicious food to the people of those lands!”
“Good, I’m counting on you!”
“Leave it to me!”
