One day, the three of us adventurers were celebrating our victory at the tavern after returning from a quest when….
「Cheers! We really did great today, didn’t we? Otto’s bow was amazing.」 「Yeah, Mr Domingo’s moves were super impressive too.」 「That direct hit to the leviathan’s forehead! That was awesome.」
As we were talking, a man came over and joined in.
「Haha, a leviathan, huh? Takes me back. You runts actually managed to take down a leviathan?」
The man had a goatee and was pushing a wheelchair. He was clearly quite drunk, with his face flushed all the way to the tip of his nose.
「Yeah, we did… What about you? Were you an adventurer too?」 「Yeah, I used to be an adventurer like you guys back in the day, but as you can see, I took an arrow to the knee and now I’m stuck in this chair, just drinking my days away.」 「I see. Wanna drink with us? We’ve got plenty to go around.」 「Oh, don’t mind if I do. Let me regale you with some stories from my glory days.」
The man started telling tales of his adventures after taking a swig of ale. All of his stories were fascinating, like hearing the myths of ancient heroes come to life. His name was Murdoch. According to Murdoch, he used to be an S-rank adventurer back in his heyday.
He told us all about the monsters that still give us trouble. He shared useful tips like the weak points of Bloody Grizzlies and other insightful stories. He also told us about the incident that cost him his leg. A poisoned arrow from a goblin archer elite struck his knee directly. Not even healing magic could help, so they had to amputate.
It’s sad to think that an adventurer of Murdoch’s caliber was forced to retire like that. With his skills, he could have aimed even higher, to S+ rank or even SS. And from his stories, Murdoch seemed incredibly capable. The three of us are A-rank, but Murdoch made it to S-rank solo. The more I listened, the more I sympathized with Murdoch’s plight. Here he is, still drinking and telling old adventure stories. He clearly still has unfinished business with his adventuring days. So I decided to make him an offer.
「Murdoch, if you want, why not let our master take a look at your leg? I’m sure Lord Eld would be able to help.」 「Oioi, you guys are slaves, right? Should you really be asking your master for favors like that? Won’t he get mad at you for giving him orders?!」 「No, it’ll be fine with Lord Eld. If we explain, I’m sure he’d happily cast some healing magic. Lord Eld is practically an angel.」 「Huh, if you insist that much, guess I’ll take you up on it.」 「Yeah, I’ll ask when we get home today.」
I made Murdoch that promise.

When I told Master Eld about Murdoch’s situation, he readily agreed to help without hesitation.
「I see… Yes, that is quite the shame. Bring that man to me.」 「Master Eld…! Thank you so much!」
As expected, a compassionate master is a blessing to have.
